Twinsburg High School math teacher Cara McPherson got a big surprise Monday morning when she found out about a prestigious award that she won.

McPherson was given the 2012 George B. Chapman Jr. Teacher Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education. Only one teacher in Ohio gets the award each year.

As part of her application, McPherson will get a $7,500 award to implement a "flipped classroom" project. The project would create an online database for the math department of teacher created lessons and supplements to lessons.

The idea for the project is a way to keep material fresh in students' minds with the potential challenges of the new modified block scheduling format the high school is implementing next year.
