POLL: Should the School Board Still Pursue A Levy?

School officials are deciding whether to continue plans for a levy in May after learning they may receive a funding boost from the state.

The Twinsburg school board is caught in a game of budgetary chicken.

Do they continue with plans to for a renewal levy in May despite the possibility of a funding boost from the state?

If the state funding boost touted by Gov. John Kasich actually materializes -- that's very uncertain right now -- and the school board keeps the levy on the ballot, then the school board risks upsetting voters.

But if the school board cancels its levy plans and the extra state funding fizzles, or turns out to be less than originally thought, then the district is caught having to make drastic budget cuts.

The school board is hosting a public forum on Feb. 27 to discuss this decision with voters.

What do you think the board should do? Take our poll and then tell us in the comments how you feel about this issue.

Why are you (the reporter) STILL calling it a renewal? Its NOT!! Do you also work for MSNBC? Sure would be great to be like old times. Where we (citizens) got the straight scoop from the news. This levy will be permanete if voted in. A forever tax.

Technically it is a renewal levy (same mills I believe) at a continuing rate so by saying renewal they are not incorrect. People are putting emphasis on the renewal and not the continuing portion of this levy. Personally I believe the schools should wait until the State budgets are further finalized and then, if needed, go to the polls in November.

No, it is making the renewal levy PREMINATE. Read it. Misinformed people do silly things :-)

Again, it is a renewal of the current levy - for a continuing period of time. Continuing means no end date, no end date means permanent. I am not misinformed.

Carl, the bottom line is that we are essentially saying the same thing - unfortunately it is all in the choice of words. If passed will the "renewal" levy be permanent - yes. In ballot language continuing means permanent. In this case, the School Board is asking voters to renew an existing levy - it is not a new levy, hence the term renewal. Any entity that puts a levy no the ballot has the right to change from renewal to continuing - it is just up to the voters at that point.

Kinda have to agree with Annie on this one, Carl. Go to Summit County Board of Elections (http://www.summitcountyboe.com/PDFs/2013/100DAYMAY.pdf) to read the ballot language. It is proposed as a renewal levy for a continuing period of time. We just need to educate all voters what this means. If the issue passes with this language, we will never have a chance to vote on it again.

Its hard to believe they are even allowed ask for a never ending tax. its bad enough they lie to the community and threaten us with what they will cut,.just so they can have extra spending money,Twinsburg has enough money coming in from taxes,If they cannot run the city with what they are already getting, then we need new people in office that can, not people lieing just so everybody can get raises, new police cars ect.And you people out there, just to let you know, your taxes will go down a bit if you vote no, And by the way,Having the school kids at the square with signs to vote for the school levy was just wrong, shoulda been illegal, but it worked
