Spreading the Love of Reading Person to Person

The Twinsburg Rotary Club will pass out books for World Book Night on April 23

The Rotary Club of Twinsburg and Brewster’s Café will be participating in World Book Night, by handing out copies of the title, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.

It's a novel telling the story of seven men who served with Alpha Company during the Vietnam War.

Rotary members will be passing out the book after a short reading in Brewster’s Bar area  at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012.

World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books and is to be held in the U.S. as well as the U.K. and Ireland on April 23, 2012. The evening will see tens of thousands of people go out into their communities to spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks. This event began in 2011 in the UK and Ireland and this is the first year to be held in the United States.

April 23 is the UNESCO International Day of the Book, chosen in honor of Shakespeare and Cervantes, who both died on April 23, 1616. (It is also the anniversary of Shakespeare's birthday.) In the Catalan region of Spain, the day is celebrated by giving a book and a flower to a loved one.

Previously the U.K. only celebrated World Book Day by giving schoolchildren a book token. World Book Night was started to encourage the love of reading among adults.
