Student Barred from Kent State Campus Over Twitter Threat

University president named as victim in case; William Koberna to be released on bond

The Kent State University sophomore who threatened to open fire on campus has been barred from setting foot on university grounds.

William L. Koberna, 19, of Brunswick, was barred from setting foot on campus today as one condition of his release on bond just one day after being arrested on charges of inducing panic and aggravated menacing.

Koberna was arraigned this afternoon in Portage County Municipal Court on the charges, which stemmed from a message he posted on Twitter threatening to use a fire arm on campus.

The tweet, posted this month, reportedly included profanity directed at Kent State President Lester Lefton and also stated "I'm shooting up your school ASAP," according to Ohio.com.

Koberna was set to be released from the Portage County jail this afternoon after his family posted a $4,900 bond, according to court records.

The conditions of his bond release included that he wear a GPS monitoring bracelet; he is labeled as "persona non grata at KSU campus;" and that he have no contact with the alleged victim, Kent State President Lester Lefton, according to court records.

Kent State spokesperson Eric Mansfield said in an email that university officials are interpreting the court's "persona non grata at KSU campus" as meaning all eight university campuses located across Northeast Ohio.

"He had attended the main campus," Mansfield said.

A preliminary hearing on the charges is set for Friday morning in the Kent branch of Portage County Municipal Court.

Aside from the criminal charges, Koberna faces university hearings that could lead to his suspension or dismissal.

Kent State University police filed charges of inducing panic, a fifth-degree felony, and aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor after discovering the tweet. Brunswick Police arrested the sophomore Sunday at his residence.
