Tigers' Macer places Fifth at State Meet

Versatile Twinsburg senior closes out high school career with All-Ohio honors

Twinsburg's Aaron Macer closed out his high school career in style.

Macer, the talented three-sport star for the Tigers, earned All-Ohio honors at the Division I state track and field championships yesterday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. He cleared 6-7 in the high jump event to take fifth place in Ohio's largest division.

Macer was hoping to match his effort of 6-8 in the regional meet but coach Spencer Johnson was happy with his senior's performance at Ohio State University.

"We were hoping he could challenge the school record," said Johnson. "I'm proud for him and happy with what he accomplished. I think he had a fabulous season."

Macer finished as a four-year letterman for the track and field team and was the anchor runner on the Tigers' 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams this year. Macer will continue his athletic and academic career in college at Ohio University as a member of the Bobcats' football team.

Twinsburg's girls failed to advance to the finals of the 4x100-meter relay at Columbus. The foursome of seniors Taylor Coghlan, Kirsten Isaac, Sierra Strozier and sophomore Taylor Ware turned in a time of 49.21 in the preliminaries.

There is good reason for optimisim for next season for both the boys' and girls' teams. Junior Chris Moermond returns as the school record holder in the pole vault (14-6) and freshman Garrett Chrichlow was sixth in the regional in the 1600 meters. Junior sprinter Tre Jones returns along with sophomore runners John Barton, Tommy King and Matt Kelly. Sophomore Eric Moorer is back in the high jump and junior Brandon Anthony returns in the long jump and sprints.

"We look forward to competing again next year," said Johnson. "Without a doubt, we have the toughest regional in the state. Just to make it out of there is an accomplishment. We always tell our guys to do their best and let the results take care of themselves."

The Lady Tigers lose standout hurdler Emily Kazarinoff (sixth in the regional 100-meter hurdles) and three-time regional 400 meter qualifier Jasmine Smith, who participated on two state 4x400-meter relays, to graduation. Ware, a top sprinter and long jumper, is back as are throwers Mercedes Hobbs and Essence Bell.
