Voluntary Recall Issued on Excedrin, Bufferin, NoDoz and Gas-X

Bottles may contain broken or stray pills

Drugmaker Novartis is voluntarily recalling bottles of Excedrin, NoDoz, Gas-X-Prevention and Bufferin in the U.S. because they may contain stray pills or broken or chipped tablets.

Select bottles of these over the counter medications are under recall after an internal review and complaints of "broken gelcaps, chipped tablets and inconsistent bottle packaging line clearance practices" where inspectors could not rule out the possibility of pills getting into the wrong bottles, according to a release from the company.

The company has not received any complaints about the possible mix-ups or broken tablets and says there have been no reports of health issues leading to the recall.

Here are all medications on the recall list:

  • All Bufferin products expiring Dec. 20, 2013 or earlier, including regular strength tablets, low dose tablets and extra-strength tablets.
  • All Gas-X Prevention products expiring Dec. 20, 2013 or earlier.
  • All NoDoz products expiring Dec. 20, 2014 or earlier.
  • All of the following Excedrin products expiring Dec. 20, 2014 or earlier: Excedrin Extra Strength Caplets, Excedrin Extra Strength Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin Extra Strength Gel Caplets, Excedrin Extra Strength Tablets, Excedrin Back & Body Caplets, Excedrin Sinus Headache Caplets, Excedrin Migraine Caplets, Excedrin Migraine Gel Tablets, Excedrin Migraine Tablets, Excedrin Menstrual Complete Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin PM Caplets, Excedrin PM Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin PM Tablets, Excedrin Tension Headache Caplets, Excedrin Tension Headache Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin Tension Headache Gel Tablets

Novartis is asking that all medications on the list either be destroyed or returned. Visit the Novartis website for a product return and reimbursement form.

I don't buy this story for three reasons:
1. Why did they also pull the HEB private label Excedrin off the shelves simultaneously?
2. Why did the pharmacist tell me I was going to have to get a prescription in the future to buy Excedrin?
3. It is now the end of October, why haven't they managed to restock the shelves yet? That goes for HEB brand as well.

There is more to this story. Good story for an independent journalist.

I Am in a drug court program i get randomly tested and i tested this morning i had taken the excederin twice this week, I read that it could have other pain meds such as percocet, what are my chances of failing a drug test?

Excedrin seems to be the only over the counter medication which really works for migraines and such. What is the possibilty this was pulled off the shelves for poltical reasons. Now my wife has to get perscription for her migraine rather than going to the store and paying $6 for the medication. We pay $85 Dr. visit and $40 for the medicine, Well this ever get resolved and put back on the selves? Or we robbing from Peter to give to Paul?

Walmarts over the counter brand of Equate migraine medication states "Compares to Excedrin Migraine" is worked for 10 minutes, CVS brand which also compares to Excedrin Migraine didnt work at all, neither did Advil Migraine. Luckily, I also have bronchitis, so I tried a double dose of the caugh medicine with Codine. That worked, but I slept the whole night and the next day, woke up and its now the next night, WOW, where did the day go? This is what I have to look forward to? Please bring back my Excedrin Migraine so I can function.

Julie, I know your question is from January but I was just checking some other stuff on Excedrin and saw your question. Excedrin is OTC. No Percocet in Excedrin. Nothing to alert any drug test on is in Excedrin. The only differences in the Excedrin products is either there is Aspirin, or no Aspirin.

I know me too. I get migraines all the time and excedrin is the only thing that works. I can't afford to go to the doctor every time I get a headache, and I really don't want to because the narcotics they give me just make me sick and don't really help my headache. I wonder if there's anything we can do to get them to bring it back.

I have also suffered from Migraines since I could remember and doctor bills and meds were driving me bankrupt, Excedrin wasa life saver and now I'm back to days with migraines and let'snot even get into back pain. Excedrin Migraine and Excedrin Back and Body were the best out there. I hope they think of us the consumers and not the politicians.

I had severe migraines for years and I always had to go to the ER and get shots for them until I tried taking Excedrin Migraine. It stops my migraines before they get that severe and I haven't had a migraine since. Now what am I going to do? Will generic products and store brands work just as good?

I just found out that excedrin extra strength is the exact same thing as excedrin migraine - totally the same ingredients - just checked the bottles myself. They label the excedrin migraine different because you are suppose to take less of them if you suffer from mirgraine. What a farce that they don't tell you this. Switch to Excedrin extra strength - I promise it is exactly the same.

Generic brands do NOT work the same (well for me anyway). You can give it a try, but I think their claim that it's "comparable to Excedrin" is a joke. I wonder what the heck they do to Excedrin that makes it so much better than everything else. That has to be why they’re taking it off the shelves – it actually WORKS. Ugh…I am just furious at the company. How can they do this to their customers?

Fortunately you can still buy the little packets online!!! Just search for Excedrin at the Wholesale Warehouse Supply, Staples, Office Depot, and Office Max sites. WWS sells boxes of 50 packets for $17.77. Better hurry before that’s gone too!

I called the makers of Excedrin (Novartis) last night and GREAT NEWS, they will be putting Excedrin back on the shelves by end of June - July 2012. I am so happy. There is nothing generic or combinations of any other medications that work for me. When my vision starts to blur and I know a migraine is about to start, I take Excedrin Migraine and it will stop the migraine from progressing. I do know that Excedrin migraine has ingredients in it to eleviate visual/sound disturbance, light sensitivity and nausea. No other products have these ingredients. I read the information on Novartis web site. Going to the ER has actually made my migraine worse. I've been injected with a narcotic I'm okay for a few hours and then when it wears off, the migraine is much worse. I'm just very happy that I will soon have Excedrin Migraine back so I can stop suffering!

Thank goodness I have some at work, I may try some of the discount stores to see if they still have Excedrin on the shelf. Excedrin Migraine is the only over the counter item that helps me with Sinus pain, and neck pains ( when I sleep wrong). I hope they get released soon, we may miss the pain relief, but what about the workers at the company that makes Excedrin, they may really be in pain right now. Good luck Novartis

Same ingredients. The generic says the same but generic meds are put together differently and that is why they don't work the same as our beloved Excedrin. It is all in the science. Some of my friends locally suggest those BC or Goody's Powder to be used straight out of the pouch, directly on the tongue. I don't know how they can stand it but they swear by it. I prefer Excedrin just because.

I had a doctor tell me years ago that because of my tendency to get an ulcer, to disolve the Excedrin in water first and then drink it. (Yum!) In trying that with Excedrin it took uner a minute to disolve the pill. With the generic versions it was over 30 minutes. I wonder if that has something to do with the difference in effect.

You will find my comments under Joyce F. posted on August 24, 2012. FDA and Novartis want me to turn my unused tablets back to Novartis for them to exam themselves. I do not know if Excedrin Migraine was my culprit but I am not letting Novartis exam these tablets. I am looking for possible class action suits against Novartis. If you find any please post and I will do the same. Attorneys are expensive and testing labs for these tablets are at least $150. per tablet plus more to do controlled substance panel test.

i don't believe for one minute that excedrin was pulled because of chipped or broken pills of other kinds. i believe they were pulled because they worked too good n kept those of us with migraines or back probs out of the er, also be ready for the products not coming back out at all or not coming back out with the same ingredients or at least the same amount. i have been using ecedrin products since the late 60's n everyone who's left a comment about it working is right. i want to praise the norvartis company for all the years of pain relief of headaches i've had. n i hope they do come back with the same of everything including the same amount of ingredients. i'm just warning that the possibility of it not happening is possible. n the generic brands don't work CVS or WALGREENS.

all. Because of a mixing of the drugs in the machine? How would that take years to rectify? And what kind of corporation cares so little about its cutomers they give no explaination when they do something this drastic? Answer: a company that no one should trust.

I've been managing with migraines since 1982. Excedrin works if I catch it early enough. I use Imitrix for the big ones. But mostly I prevent migraines by not eating several foods that trigger them. The list is very long but well worth not having a migraine. Every migraine sufferer I think has some level of food allergies and could improve their life by avoiding these foods. Find an allergist and get tested. Then do some testing on your own to see which effect you the most. (good for weight control too!) My list includes: dairy (milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, etc), gluten (wheat, rye, oats, barley, etc),soy, sugar, corn, beef, peanuts, artificial sweeteners , citrus, chocolate, wine, alcohol, and a few others. Sounds impossible, right? It is real, and works 98% of the time. If you are desperate enough, you will try this. Takes discipline. Take control and leave the drug companies behind.

This is good for you Martha, but I have seen an allergies and food is not a trigger for me. And may not be a trigger for others. I take Migraines meds and still get headaches. The migraines meds usually put me to sleep and I end up missing work. with Excedrin I can take it and usually be to work on time. IT WORKS. We need it back. ASAP!

Unfortunately, not all allergists are great. I actually see an environmental ecologist since 1982. She has absolutely saved my life. But she has only been the catalyst. I have done all the investigative work. I refused to believe there was no reason why i had so much pain. In the end, yes, I guess I am more sensitive than others perhaps. But I live healthy and mostly pain free. I wish this for all my fellow-migraine sufferers. I say keep looking for your trigger. There is so much 'bad' environment. The air you breathe - do you wear perfume, burn candles, use plug-ins, use "air freshners", use scented products including laundry detergent, shampoo, soap, use dryer sheets? All these contain chemicals you breathe in or absorb through the skin. The food most people eat is full of chemicals and artificial junk, high in non-nutrition. Gluten is a huge problem with a lot of people. Asper tame, sucrolose, etc bad for the body. Journal everything you do and eat. Look for a pattern. And just TRY not eating the biggies like gluten and dairy. No doctor will help you find the answer. They only want to prescribe. But don't give up. There IS reason for the pain. You just have to find it.

Frequent bad headached. Exedrin extra stength is all that works for me. So I had to buy generic Family dolla store brand. I did my best to research ingredients on bottles and on google. The key active ingredients are identical to excedrin extra strenth and thank goodness working. I also half the time have night headaches because of the 65% caffine I have to take one excedrin and two exedrin PM...so now it is one generic and two sleep aid pills. I too hope for them all to be back on the shelf soon.

I to suffer from terrible headaches and excedrein is the only thing that gets me back on my feet I do agree you have to be careful of how many you take in a day they can be very addictive. I just ran out and am now taking generic brand which don't work I have had this headache for 3 days now. Please bring excedrin back...

Don't know if this has to do with the excedrin recall, however around Christmas I was sick and taking excedrin migraine, extra strength, and tylenol cold and sinus. I got a nose bleed 4 days in a row. On the 5 day it wouldn't stop. Had to be hospitalized for weeks. I had two operations to stop the bleeding and two blood transfusions. Has anyone had a nose bleed after taking these meds?

It is probably because of the Aspirin in the meds. Talk to your doctor and make sure for your protection but I would be willing to bet it is Aspirin related. Not all Excedrin has Aspirin.

HI; I live in Mexico and Both I and my daughter use Excedrin Migraine (Which we USED to be able to get here) and Excedrin PM; which I have to get from the US. Just recently when going to pick up another bottle of excedrin I found they were out, That is not uncommon, as often they are out, But Now I cannot find it anywhere here and upon asking, they say they are out and all the other stores are. I just found out about this recall on this Website OH NOO! I hope it does end soon, I unlike most of you still have a small amount left. I just found out there are NO Bottles left in Merida (Where I live) and I am buying the last four bottles I have found in a small town here. In Mexico, Farmacias YZA is the Farmacy that has been selling them, as well as Wallmart. Perhaps you can still find them in other parts of Mexico. Farmacias YZA can check all the registries of one town, if you can call Mexico City, Or Monterrey, Or somewhere perhaps you may get lucky if you know anyone visiting Mexico.

Excedrin migraine is the only thing that will work on my headaches. I too went to Walgreens tonight to buy some and they didn't have it ,looked at Walmart and asked the pharmacist. He said it was recalled and they were told to remove it from their shelves. I can't cope without it when I get my headaches. HELP!!

I read in the wall street journal website that excedrin migraine, and products of the like, were not pulled only because of "broken pills mixed in", but because "a batch was mixed with morphine and other opiots", so what???? if i go to the hospital with a migraine, what do they give me, morphine and $2000 bill.

LOL.David.!! So true. But I doubt that story. Usually the opiods are used in a controlled area. But I am missing my Excedrin migraine too. It better come back or I'll have to take 250mg of tylenol, 250 mg of asprin and 65 mg caffiene--that's what's on the label of contents, so I'll give it a try 'til then. ___Lauren

I forgot to mention.... I live with pain every day. Excedrin Migraine is the only thing that works and it takes away ALL of the pain in just a few minutes. I have been plagued by migrains since I was about 5 years old and the ony other meds that worked were massive doses of ibuprophen. Now I have liver disease, stomach ulcers, and an undiagnosable pain in my left side. Please bring back Excedrin Migraine as it was.

The truth about the recall is that all bottles were purchased by one person. I have it on good information from my hair dresser's butcher's girlfriends mother-in-law that a golden capsule was placed in one bottle. The finder of the golden capsule will get a lifetime supply of excedrin, excedrin migraine, excedrin PM, ......... Yes, everyone its me, ive got it, its mine, ALL MINE, AAAHHHHHHAAAAHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA....... You see what pain does to me....

Strange circumstance.................been taking Excedrine for years for migraines. Around the time of the recall I had taken some excedrine and noticed some very bad stomach pains. Since I was also prescribed recently Lisinopril I felt it was what was causing the problem. Consulted the doctor and have been on a roller coaster ride with this problem. Quit Lisinospril after a full gall bladder check and an endoscopy was done as well. Have no real clue that Excedrine was the cause but my comments to my doctor was that I had taken two and the problem started. I advised him I was afraid to take any more. He felt it was strange after all these years of use and shrugged it off. It is not available in the store as of 2/19/12 so dealing with my headaches is difficult. Seems like the medication has been off the market way to long for such a "strange" issue of misspackaged. Stomach issue is a constant bother as of today.

Not a Dr - however, just taking Asprin & Asprin type pain products for years bcuz of being a migraine headache sufferer CAN for some - evolve eventually into an Ulcer or Ucerated stomach situation.

I too have to fight both ends so to speak! lol. Migraine Headache & Ulcers. What works for one aggravates the other & visa versa - But - what are ya gonna do?

WOW!! After reading all these posts, I find I am not alone. For YEARS, I have been on a rollercoaster of doctor ordered migraine medications which did not work. I was also in and out of emergency rooms with shots of morphine. Only to find that something purchased over the counter worked--- EXCEDRIN MIGRAINE. It worked so much so, that I went to Costos and purchased a 300 caplet bottle (a while ago). I hadn't heard about the recall until yesterday when another Migraine sufferer told me and she didn't know what she was going to do. I shared some of mines with her. I spoke with my Dr. about Excedrin Migraine and he told me that medication "like" Excedrin Migraine can sometimes cause the body to have "false migraines", and to be careful about taking them days in a row, or to many in a short number of days. I don't know how true this is??? But I say this because of another post: About the product being reintroduced on the shelves but some of the ingredients changed or lowered. I really hope that this is not the case, because the product is a good one, and works well for so many people. I have suffered from Migraines for over 30 years, and never found something which works as well and as quickly. I like so many who posted here, wonder how long it will be before they are back on shelves. Meanwhile, I will continue counting the ones I have left and maybe lucking out and finding some at a gas station or some small store, like the other lady did.

I have also suffered for years with migraines and see a Neurologist in Boston. On many preventatives and take Treximet (life saver) when they are severe but you can only have a few per month. Otherwise you go to ER! Excederin migraine is a must have for smaller migraines. As long as you dont use too often you won't have recurring migraines. No other OTC migraine meds work. Please bring it back no matter what the recall reason was!!!! Helps so many people

As of February 21, 2012, the Novartis Consumer support was unable to provide a time table for when the production would resume for Excedrine Migraine in the Lincoln, NE plant. Wish I had better news. I have found that prescription Fiorinal helps and allows you to continue to work without any sleepy side effects. In the US, Fiorinal is a combination analgesic medication consisting of aspirin, the barbiturate butalbital and caffeine. As a note, some migraines are directly related to a change in atmospheric pressure, so keeping an eye on the weather can help to anticipate the potential onset of migraines.

Could it be though, that this product is addictive? And that's behind the recall? Sure, it works great but look how dependent we are on it. I read about people who take it everyday, some have used it since the 60s? I know some of the ingredients help headaches but I also understand. If you're use to taking those ingredients (like caffeine) everyday, then they're gone, THAT can create a headache. So maybe the company is in trouble for creating addicts? I know one thing for sure, their pr department sucks! Or is non-existent! You would think a company that is so big, would have teams of public relations types out there doing some damage control with lots of updates. Instead we're all left with a sign at the store that says to contact them. Leaving us with a lot of time to sit in pain and imagine the worst. So weird!

Jessica

That's certainly a possibility. I wouldn't think it would be any more addictive than drinking coffee though. And if that is the case, don't you think they would just say so instead of making something up about a medication mix-up? It's not like their customers can do anything about it either way.

Anyway...you're right, it's very weird. I was a bit suspicious when I heard about the recall a couple months ago, but unfortunately I ignored my suspicion and actually trusted that they'd get it back on the shelves. Silly me!

Caffeine and headache sufferers are a no-no anyway by word of most doctors I have dealt with, just like chocolate and nuts. Yes, rebound headaches are possible because of the body's dependence when there is lots of caffeine intake but usually more with chronic narcotic use for recurrent headaches. I have not heard of caffeine being labeled a drug.

I to rely on Excedrin Migrain tabs daily. I have tried the other meds on the shelves from other companies such as Advil and they DO NOT work. I check the store everyday hoping to see them on the shelf again with no avail. After trying everything whose name contained migraine ( and I was feeling desperate ) I figured what the heck and bought the Equate Headache. It was only 94 cents so I figured I didn't have anything to lose. It contained the exact same ingredients as Excedrin Migraine. Every morning I wake to a headache which turns into a migraine if I don't have something to take. I am able to buy the small Packets at the convenient stores. Never had any problems with tampered or broken caplets. Hope the problem is resolved soon. i have been having migrains since i injured my back in 1996 and had a milogram done for the purpose of finding nerve damage. i have taken everything known to man for relief of my migrains and nothing worked until being introduced to excedrin migrain. i feel that the only reason this has been recalled is because doctors were loosing money due to patients finding out more and more over a period of time that exedrin migrain actually works. i feel that the doctors got in touch with politicians which in turn got in touch with fda and had it removed. i believe that it is all a money thing. something that most people dont have and most dont have insurance or the money to pay for any perscriptions that are out there that dont work anyway. that is just so that they can keep you coming back to them to run your bill up and knowing there is no way to pay for it. which in turns ruins your credit.

I have read most of the replies. I see their are many people suffering from this recall. I also know that there is a reason for the recall, and it is for the public's safety or it would not have been pulled from the shelves. Look at the people that relied on this medicine for there migraines and other aches and pains. It goes to show you that it is a great product, and it is non-narcotic. The generic brand I have tried. It doesn't hold a light to excedrin. We just want what works for us.

Tammy dear, everything you said is so true! One thing I've found out the hard way over the years & definately not by choice though is that we are able to have another item work just as well for us - given a bit of time. You see the body & mind must adjust and it seems that about 3 to 4 weeks is what is takes avg. for most. This happened to me w/Brand over Generic when I flat Knew generic would not work for me & then all of a sudden no-one would pay for Brand for me any longer. I thought I'd die and then between 3-4 wks. later I was ok. I have cpl ot example but wont bore u. :-)

If anyone has noticed at the bottom of this page, there is an ad for "Ask a Lawyer Online Now" I clicked on it, filled out the info, hit enter an in less than a minute I got a call from a service which connected me to a Lawyers office in my area. I dont usually endorce ads on the internet, but in this case, I would like to suggest a class action suit against Novartis for creating a recall without supplying a new replacement in a timely fashion. I dont know if it is a viable cause, but pain has been felt by far too many to go unnoticed.

I suffer from chronic migraines (+15 days/month) My neurologist wrote me a script for something called Panlor = acetaminophen, caffeine, dihydrocodein. The 1st 2 ingredients are in excederin migraine, the dihydrocodein is a synthetic form of hydrocodon - its not a narcotic, so its not addictive & you don't get a "high" feeling either. I now refer to Panlor as excederin migraine on crack (it works that well for me, better than excederin migraine. I'm just sharing to be helpful, I understand that prescriptions are more $ than excederin migraine, but I also know when I have a migraine I want it to go away no matter what the cost (speaking from experience)

HI Ann,
Just for your education, I looked up Panlor on Drugs.com. They do claim that Panlor can be addictive, and dangerous to the liver. I was taking ibuprofen for many years to try and manage the pain from migrains, and now I have liver damage, and an undiagnosable pain in my left side. All of which Excedrin Migraine took away all the pain and allowed me to function normally after a few minutes. I have found some excedrin on Ebay and I'm willing to bid for it. good luck with the Panlor, and I hope you continue to feel better.

Ann

12:47 am on Thursday, March 8, 2012

Hi Dave. Good luck with you eBay purchase. Just sharing as info, the liver damage warning for Panlor is due to the acetaminophen, which is also in excederin migraine, and re: addiction, from drugs.com Panlor SS may be habit-forming and lead to DEPENDENCE if used in high doses or for a long period of time.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you are able to get whatever helps! :-)

I worked for a drug company for 22 years, in the packaging dept. if chipped or broken tablets is the only thing wrong they should not have to be recalled. But if the wrong tablets were put in the bottles then yes recall. But who ever was running the line should have pick up on that right away. You have to have the product signed in by QA or a Supervisor. So something else maybe going on that they are not telling.

Yeah, it's weird. When I heard about the recall, I just thought "Oh, so they're recalling a few of their shipments. Probably won't affect many people." I didn't think they'd pull every single one of their products from every store everywhere! What the heck???

I discovered Excedrin Migrane as a solution to my headaches over 10 years ago, but many times I took it too late and still suffered the pain and getting sick .... Once I recovered I would then be hyped up from the caffeine (usually late @ night negatively impacting the following day). Several years ago I discovered the primary trigger of my headaches - rapid changes in barometric pressure (stress & fatigue are also factors, but the barometric changes are the primary trigger). Now I monitor this with weather forecasts, a barometer with an alarm and noting when I start feeling a little droopy for no obvious reason and pop one (1) Excedrin Migraine and I am good to go. Most weeks I only need 3-4 tabs to prevent my headaches and rarely if ever take a full dose. Hopefully this type of dosage is not a health hazzard. My wife just came home with a generic and I hope and pray it works or else I will be laying in a dark bedroom sometime in the next week praying it does not go through the full cycle knocking out another chunk of my life. I hope Excedrin Migraine is back on the shelves shortly and we all are able to be confident we can fend off the headaches that can deprive us of a quality life.

Like everyone else who has experienced migraine headaches, Excedrin Migraine is the ONLY medication that works for me. (I could hug the scientists who came up with this precisely-correct mixture of compounds). If I take it the MINUTE my checks start becoming numb and the vice grip starts closing in on my head, Excedrin Migraine will make the foreshadowing symptoms of a lost day disappear. I thought my migraines were actually gone. (I never believed in them in the first place - until I had one). But they aren't gone, I've been PREVENTING them by taking this marvelous drug at the first signs of onset. This morning I used Walgreens extra strength Headache Relief and it stopped the head pain. My cheeks are still numb though as I write this, but I can handle that. I hope the Excedrin people realize the good their product does and are working overtime to get it back on the shelves as soon as they feel everything is checked out!

I call the customer service number that I found on the excedrin website and the rep told me that excedrin wont be back on the shelves until June but the smaller packages which were no affected by the recall and safe to take and are available at most gas stations and convenience stores. im going to try my local stations in hopes of finding something because i just used the last of my stash of excedrin this week. i hope that this tiny amount of information helps.

I don't understand why some people say the generic (which there are a ton of different brands--every store has one) does not work for them--it is the same exact ingredients--you could even take 1 aspirin, 1 tylenol & some caffeine--realyy it is the aspirin & caffeine that do it--the caffeine just makes the aspirin & tylenol work better.

Grind up one aspirin and one tylenol and mix it in a cup of strong coffee. This will deliver the same medication that Excedrin contains as quickly as Excedrin is able to do it.

Maybe keep the powder set side so you can microwave a cold cup of coffee with it in a hurry.

Rebound headaches from taking a product tooooo much is very common. Extra strength Anacin has the same ingredients and it works. I have had migraines for 30+ years, Anacin has worked for me. Costco used to have their own brand, that was also good. I doubt highly this is "political" or a "conspiracy", I think this is a company that is trying not to have a death or a lawsuit on their hands...they have to investigate,it takes time. I'd rather they do that then never put it back on the shelves to soon. Xtra strength Excedrine is exactly the same as Excedrine Migraine, except the price!

My husband works as a compounder in a large pharmaceutical company. All things are possible...BUT...this is nonsense. There are sooo many checks in place that
the chances of 1 contaminated batch are slim to none! My guess...wait and see...it'll be back prescription. Only!!!! P.s. I take percocet and morphine for chronic pain...excedrin works wonders. Especially for migraines...c'mon!

I have suffered with migraines for years. I take imitrex when they are bad but it seems to be taking longer to take effect. Excedrin Migraine works if I take it at the onset of a migraine. But I do agree with the people saying you can become addicted to it. I used to take it 2 or 3 times a day to keep my headaches under control. I believe I was having rebound headaches . I made myself suffer for several days without taking it and finally I stopped having so many headaches. Try taking a product with the same ingredients but with a drink containing alot of caffeine. I have read many articles saying caffeine makes pain relievers work faster. I love excedrin migraine and am down to 4 pills and don't know what to do either. I only take it now when I absolutely have to. Also, I quit sleeping with my cell phone charging on my bedside table after reading how some people get headaches from that. Believe it or not my headaches have decreased even more. I don't wake up with one each morning now. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYBODY!

Will Excedrin Migraine ever come back on the market? My wife used to suffer from frequent migraines and Excedrin seemed to help. Though she has been migraines have stopped entirely I would like to keep something around just in case they return.

Ebay has some Excedrin Migrain on there for sale. They go high some a $1 per tablet -- but if they work for you , you should check it out. I am struggling financially right now and used to take it all the time. But my body must be used to it because it doesnt work for me anymore. I just checked my cupboard and just found a sealed box of excedrine migrain 125 tablets. I am going to put it on there and see what I get for it. I am struggling and even though it doesnt seem right, I have to do what I have to do to feed mine. Maybe someone who really needs it will appreciate it whether they pay more for it or not.

They were taken off the shelf because there were opioids found in some...that could explain the excellent headache relief and the addiction that some people on here are talking about...I have worked in a pharmacy for 7 years...they are planning to come back out with the same strengths of every ingredient minus the opioids...this is called a SAFETY recall for a reason people...it is to protect the consumers not make people go to the ER...

I had a terrible migraine, my husband went to the store b/c I had to have exceddin migraine, the only thing that works for me. He came home, gave me water and pills, I noticed it looked different, but was too bad off to ask, just assumed it was excedrin A couple hours later I got up and found my way downstairs and asked him what the heck he gave me, I was no better off.. He hoped i would not notice, he is a medic. Following week thought I had to go to the er for relief. Last week, I had a migraine coming on for 3 days, first day took other migraine brand, second day 3 Tylenol and 3 hours later, it was creeping up again and when I got home ended up taking prescription Tylenol 3 with codine and graugy the next morning when I got up for work. I hate this. I will try the Brand someone found at Safeway as there is one nearby. Thanks for the information.

I had a large bottle of Excedrin Migraine I purchased from Costco. I got the notification in the mail that it could be returned. I didn't return it and kept using it. No problems until a few days ago. I am just about at the bottom of the bottle. I found a large pill in there that is white and says AMC on one side and on the other side it has a division mark and one side says 375 and the other says 125. Have no idea what it is. Coni

Novartis wants me to send my excedrin migraine back to them. Are they crazy. Why would they tell me the truth?? If you find class action suit please post and I will do the same. Ask any lawyer....and see what they say about turning your tablets over to Novartis. I am allergic to codeine. I have a recall letter about my Excedrin Migraine. See my comments under Joyce F. posted August 24, 2012

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE EXCEDRIN MAY HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF THE MARKET FOR FEAR OF A LAWSUIT! Afterall the comments on this blog attest to the fact there are many people addicted to it. I know I am! What cheaper way for the company to avoid a massive financially destructive lawsuit than to just remove it with some lame excuse and escape with all their money intact? Call me crazy but... THINK about it first.

BRAND NAME DRUGS VS GENERICS. I have been the manager of a medical testing lab (neurology) for 17 years, and have interviewed at least 15,000 patient for medical history. It is clear that the answer to question of whether brand name drugs are better or the same as generics, or vice-versa, can only be answered by the person taking the medications. Countless patients have told me over the years about their experiences with medications, and the only thing for certain is that each person has to experiment to find which med is effective for them. Don't believe the marketing.

I spent 3 days in the hospital after taking Excedrin Migraine (2 tablets in the morning for 5 days in a row because I thought I had virus related headache. The first four days I started experiencing severe chest pains within 45 minutes of taking the excedrin migraine. I would then take another pain med and maalox to combat the chest pain and it would go away after another hour of resting in a chair. On the fifth day, nothing would relieve the pain. I thought I may be having heart attack because I felt the pain was going down my left arm. I managed to drive myself to my husbands job 5 mins. away where he took me to hospital. Spent 3 days there undergoing heart and digestive tests. Nothing found except red stomach. Prescribed Reglan. Next day blood pressure so low I could not get up. Refused Reglan. Blood pressure returned to normal. Was finally given regular meal and told could leave if meal did not cause chest pain. All was fine and left hospital. Drs. made stress test appointment for me. No Excedrin Migraine in hospital and did not take again for 7 days. The next sunday, I took two from the same bottle as before. Within 45 minutes began the chest pain again. Refused to return to hospital. Had heart stress test next week. When arriving home, found letter saying my Excedrin Migraine was in recall. I am highly allergic to codeine. Causes chest pain! Took Excedrin Migraine for years and bought at Sams Club only once.

Try any generic store brand. For those who say they aren't the same... Try putting the generic form. In the Ecedrine bottle. Look up the difference between generic vs name branded drugs . It's mostly a psychological thing.

Thank you for the reply. My brand name Excedrin Migraine was in the recall. I do take the generic brand and always had until I found the Excedrin Migraine at Sams Club in December of 20ll and bought a three bottle pack because it was on sale. I got sick within 45 minutes each time I took 2 tablets from the Sams Club bottles of Excedrin Migraine. I actually ended up in the hospital on the 4th day I tried those pills from Sams Club because I could not get the chest pains to stop. To this day, I firmly believe the Excedrin Migraine is tainted. I am very allergic to codeine and my recall letter states that the Excedrin Migraine may have been mixed with other medicines such as percodan, etc. I am looking for anyone who may have suffered adverse reactions from the recalled medicine or found any unnamed pills in their recalled bottles such as the person who seemed to have found an antibiotic in theirs. My letter also says that Novartis had been exposing the brand name Excedrin Migraine to other medicines for around five years. I am looking for a class action suit to start as Labs are more than I can afford to have my tablets tested on my own. Novartis wants my tablets back...no way they are going back to them to be tested by their own employees. The FDA even says to let Novartis test them. These tablets will only go back after a suit is filed. I feel for people who are begging for the brand name. I suffer migraines, too. But I suffered more in that hospital.

It's definitely NOT mostly a psychological thing. Believe me if you blindfolded me and gave me either generic or Excedrin, I'd be able to tell the difference.

In my search to find a generic equivalent, I tried the CVS brand and found that it made me dizzy and nauseous (and did NOT cure my headache). Fortunately I later found that the Safeway brand is pretty decent and helps my headaches, but it's still not the same.

Feverfew tabs, they are an herbal, start taking them religiously every day. In a few months your migraines will disappear. You maybe be able to stop for awhile, and resume taking of you get another migraine.

Migraines can be caused in some women by excessive hormones, ie, birth control pills or HRT. When I stopped taking the pill 40 yrs ago, the 2x weekly migraines went away. Not one in all that time. Went thru 'the change' with no hormone replacements for fear of triggering another migraine. My son takes feverfew - hasn't had a migraine in years.

I too suffer from 'migraine clusters' and the only thing that knocked them out was the Excedrin migraine. I still have a bottle left and don't know what I'll do when it's gone. The generic brands don't work as well for me. Guess I'll try my own concoction until I get a mix that works...aspirin, ibuprofen and caffeine tablets, which may be a bit harder to find since they also took No-Doz off the market too!!! I know aspirin and ibuprofen is not a safe mix but being in such pain you want to beat your head against the floor isn't either. Will also check into some homeopathic treatments as well.

Many people also don't realize that with the generic vs the brand name thing, it's the fillers that affect the way the body is able to utilize the medications. Some fillers are just too darn hard for a person's body to break down to get to the medicine while for others it's not a problem. Yes, the same dosage of medicine may be in the generic but the fillers are not the same from manufacturer to manufacturer. So understanding how our bodies work with the generics will make it easier to choose a safe alternative to meds we can no longer get.

All of you retards.....I mean sheeple, WAKE UP. the FDA mandates that generics have to be chemically equivalent. Saying that Excedrin MIgraine has some special power is ridiculous. When you get a scrip from the hospital do you pay the extra $20-30 for name brand Vicoden or Penicillen? It is all in your head, and its called the placebo effect. People like you are why depression studies show that 50% of people respond to treament with a placebo (that's a sugar pill for you plain folk). When you buy Walmart's brand of generic Excedrin what does it say on the back? Another secret, look at the box of regular Excedrin, and Excedrin MIgrain, bet you feel stupid now, yes they are both the same. Plain old Asprin, Tylenol, and Caffeine. The caffeine counteracts the Main problem of Migraines-something you ate triggered a seretonin response, and the blood vessels in your head expanded, It's called vasodilation, and caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, also asprin was the very first anti-inflammatory, which also helps. The tylenol is there because it works on pain in a different way than asprin. You have bad migraines? Me too, well not as bad as they used to be, but do what i do: buy some caffeine tablets, and the next time you get a migraine..take two caffeine caps, four motrin or advil (yes, generic is fine), and two extra-strength tylenol. I just gave you the most powerful home remedy in existance for migraines, ask your doctor. OH BTW, Percocett in Excedrin? Really?

OH, please don't waste your money on homeopathic crap. Take the time to read about this fallacy, and why it cannot possibly work. Homeopathic meds are compounded, which means they take an ingredient, and mix it with water. then they take some of that, and.....yep mix it with water again, and so on, and on, and on. when you see something that says 16x or higher the dilution of the original ingredient is a number with too many zero's to print. 16x and higher is pretty much like taking the universe, and finding one molecule. The only reason stores still sell that stuff is its so cheap to produce, and uh ya you got it, the placebo effect. Wow, are we back here so soon?

Wow, this thread is just full of it. I am loving it, Jessica i would love the chance to give you that blindfold test, and ......uh, oh, oops was just thinking of a Jessica i worked with. I wish she would invite me over to blindfold her..........huh? Oh, ya generics, like I said I bet when you folks get a scrip from your doctor, and go fill it then think nothing of it, aren't concerned about generics then, because your insurance company surely isn't having anything to with name brands. Just think about it, use your god given ability to discern all of this silliness. Use your computer, and check for studies on generics. Make sure they are double blind studies, and you will find the truth. If your migraines are that bad anyway you should see a doctor, they know what causes them, and there are drugs available that help as well as other drugs that work on pain in other ways. Many docs are prescribing Elavil now to help: This pain relieving capacity of anti-depressants were at first believed to be linked to the depression mitigation effects, as depression may often be tied in with chronic pain. However, some anti-depressants, Elavil among them, have been seen to reduce pain even in patients not experiencing depression. Remember one thing, all kidding aside..I just want to help. I used to have massive cluster migraines, and it was terrible. From my early teens through my early fourties, now I get maybe two or three a year, and the coffee, 800mg advil, 1000mg tylenol solution works.

Wow,,, so many posts to read them all. First of all, if you read the ingredients store brand and exedrine list the SAME ingredients. Just sitting here reading my old bottle of exedrine and my bottle of store brand. Same stuff. Secondly, if you look at the packaging for the PMS, Migraine etcetera, same ingredients. The manufacturers package them to the pain "market ". If you have cramps you pick up the PMS. If you have a migraine, you pick up migraine. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Haven't looked at the back pain, but I'm sure it's the same. You all are addicted to the name. I bought the store brand since the recall and put them in the exedrine bottle ...only difference, no "E "on the pill. Husband finally asked about the recall. And I said we had been taking the store brand for several months now. He laughed. Store brands run $2-$3 cheaper. So no offensive excedrine, I'll be sticking to the store brand, keeping my saved cash. And I also suffer from migraines, I just take 3 instead of 2 and a cup of coffee(and a handful of olives, it seems tjesalt helps me)
