What Do YOU Think About the Teachers Union Deal? (Poll)

Last week the school board approved a contract change and extension between the district and teachers union

Last Wednesday it was announced that both the school district and teachers union approved a new contract agreement, including increasing employees' share of healthcare and pay freezes. This could save the district over the next two years the district could save $425,000.

The new agreement increases the employees' share of their health-care premium from 6 percent to 10 percent, starting next school year. Teachers will get about a 2 percent raise next year, carried over from the previous contract, but will take a pay freeze for the 2013-14 school year.

This contract could be extended to 2014-15, including health-care concessions  and the pay freeze, if the district believes it has "sufficient funds" based on the five-year forecast.

So what do you think about this new contract? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Interesting that the teachers give back $400,000/year and the BOE hires an assistant principal at a cost of $100,000/year. I thought the idea was to educate students. That money could be better spent in the class room than on another administrator. Nordonia is Twinsburg's size and only has 2 assisstant principals, Aurora is 350 students smaller and only has 1 assistant principal. Twinsburg High School population is declining, 9 teachers were cut, 15% of the classified staff was cut and the BOE and Superintendent hire an assistant principal. What kind of business model is that?

I agree with previous comment, but need to call out the district for not eliminating term of service as a requisit of who gets laid off. Pay freezes should have started immediately as well.

In light of cutting teacher staffing and next years high school students taking 7 classes instead of 8, I would recommend the teachers teach 4 block classes per day. I think the teachers time is underutilized when they only teach 3-90 minute classes. Therefore, they only actually teach for 4.5 hours/day. I think it would be reasonable for the teachers to teach 4-90 minute classes which would mean teaching for 6 hours in an 8 hour work day - still leaving a 2 hour planning time. There were several options for the block schedule proposed, however, they did suggest having the teachers teach more classes. Instead, they have chosen that the students have less classes. There are so many great classes offered at the high school and it is disappointing that students can not take as many classes.

So does that mean teachers will be paid for a full day but only actually teaching for 6 hours? Their pay scales should be adjusted accordingly.

This is not accurate information. Most teachers do not work 8 hours a day. You do have to account for the time teachers are required to be there before school begins for students, class change time, 1/2 hr lunch, and required planning time. So they are working their hours/wages. I would hope you don't expect them to do their planning at home during unpaid time?

Teacher work more than you think. How much do administraors work. You can rarely get in touch with one. They rarely return calls and never have a nice thing to say about students. The point is about admistrators. They do little in the way of educating students. Every administrator at the high school makes more than the highest paid teacher and what do they do? They are always in meetings and out of the buiding. Every administrators gets their ebtire retirement paid compared to the teachers who pay 10% towards their retirement. Thats an additional $10,000 per admistrator at least. And thats the TRUTH!!!!

Teachers do more than just teach. They do daily duties, prepare for class and grade papers just to mention a few things. It sounds like you had a more education and have no idea what a teacher does during their day. Teachers take papers home nightly because they don't have enough time during the day to do all their work. How often do you bring work home? Twinsburg is top heavy with administrators. Everyone knows this. That is the point I was making was how is having more administrators at the high school going to improve education in Twinsburg. It is a waste of money. The high school has a dysfunctional administrative team and adding more administrators only make it more dysfunctional. The BOE of education needs to get back to educating students and not covering for ineffective leadership in the district. Watch your state test scores in the coming year. The cuts the board has made in the prior years are beginning to show and will really be taking a dive in the next couple of years, And that's the TRUTH.

I hope you didn't misunderstand my reply. I mean most teachers salaries are not based on an 8 hour day. Some school districts base it on 7.5 hours.... which includes planning time and lunch. I would hope everyone knows the amount of time a teachers spends on their OWN time grading papers, etc. My reply was to their pay should be adjusted accordingly... if that was the case we would be paying teachers for 12 hours + a day and add to that some hours on Saturday/Sunday...or an evening they can't sleep and decide to work on papers.

Sometimes it is better and more efficient to buy a new car than to try to repair the old one.

I'm glad to see the conversation on this topic is vibrant. It is so apparent that this is a community that cares about its schools, but more importantly, its students.

Good teachers work a lot. My wife is a middle school teacher and she leaves for school at 6am every day and gets there at 6:30 not having to report until 7:45am. Then she always has work to do when she gets home, whether its planning, grading or whatever and thats on the weekends also. So doing school work on unpaid time well thats the life of a teacher. By the way a friend of ours is also a teacher and does the same thing.
