Smooching the Enemy: Is Dating a Fan of Another Team Possible?

Dating a fan of another team easier said than done?

Love: the hardest four letter word to say in the English dictionary. When two people are happily together, they can look past a lot of differences about each other. Some differences are bigger, like races and religions, while other differences are smaller, like having different taste in movies and food.

But when it comes to sports, it might not be a big deal for some couples, but for others, there can be stressful situations between them on game day. The question that I would like to ask is…Is it possible for fans of other teams to date?

The answer is yes. If a man picks girls due to their team of choice, he may be single for a very long time.  When two people are interested with each other, they will find things to relate with each other. Sports are something that many couples have interest in. Say that they both like baseball, but one is a Tribe fan and the other is a Tigers fan, they still both have a love of the game & have something to relate to.

There are a few pros and cons of dating a fan of another team.

Pros:

1. Every time the teams play each other, you and your partner will be attending. It might kill you to take a fan of the other team with you to the game, but it’s not like you’re taking anyone, your taking your boyfriend/girlfriend! So, no matter who wins, you two will enjoy a night out together.

2. If your team is not playing his/her team, they won’t get mad at you for taking your friends/family to the game instead. That doesn’t mean if a group is going to not invite them. It means that if you get a hold of a pair of tickets against a random team, it’s cool to take your buddy or dad or someone instead. If you do take some of the opposite sex to the game instead of your boyfriend/girlfriend, that person better be related to you!

Cons:

1.Trash talking against your partner’s team is a one way street. Guys find it cute when their girlfriends are talking trash but when a guy is talking trash, girls think their boyfriends are being rude and mean to them. Bottom line, ladies, talk all the trash you want. Fellas, please, do yourself a favor and bite your tongue!

2.There is a reason he/she likes the team that they like. Just like most sports teams, they are raised to like a team by someone they look up to.  Most likely they were raised to love their team by all their family and friends, but are you mature enough to be around them when you are with them and they are trash talking? At the end of the day, you are still an adult, so I hope you are mature enough to handle the heat!

3. When your team isn’t playing their team, your boyfriend/girlfriend will expect you to support their team. Be careful when you say, “No Way Jose” to them.

4. If you and your boyfriend/girlfriend break up, you will hate their team like it is your job. You will want their team to lose every game for the rest of your life because you know want your ex to suffer.

I have a personal example of this: I had a female best friend who was from the northern suburbs of Chicago & she is a huge Cubs fan. We were very close but then we had a huge falling out. Because of my friend, I hate the Chicago Cubs with all my heart, so much that they are third on my hate list behind the Red Sox & Yankees.

In a rage of anger one time, I said that Cubs aren’t cursed because of the goat, or the black cat, or because of Steve Bartman. The Cubs were cursed because of my ex best friend. I hated the Cubs due to a falling out with a friend, just picture how I would feel about the Cubbies if she & I were more serious.

Just because there are more cons then pros about dating a fan of another team doesn’t mean the bad outweighs the good! When you care a lot about someone, it doesn’t matter what team you two love as long as you love each other.
