Twinsburg Police Chief Warns of Black Bear Sightings

Chief Chris Noga said bear sightings will be on the rise over the next few weeks and offers tips on keeping safe.

Twinsburg Police Chief Chris Noga warned residents via Facebook Tuesday: "Over the next few weeks, black bear sightings in northeastern Ohio spike as young male bears begin to roam."

The past few years Twinsburg has had several reported sightings of the animal.

"Our policy is that if a black bear sighting is reported, officers will respond and monitor the bear's activities," Noga wrote in a Facebook post. "Generally, the bear moves on and poses no immediate imminent threat to people."

He said The Ohio Division of Wildlife won't relocate bears just because one is present, as they live in Ohio year-round.

There are several steps you can take to avoid black bears, according to The Ohio Division of Wildlife:

  • Remove bird or wildlife feeders
  • Store garbage in a secure container
  • Keep pet foods inside, especially at night
  • Clean out grease traps from grills and store them inside
  • Place electric fencing around beehives
  • Pick crops as soon as possible
If you encounter a bear, the ODW advises to remain calm, warning the bear off in a calm yet firm voice, backing away slowly with your hands high above your head. Clap and shout while exiting the area.
