Cleveland Clinic Construction Running Smoothly

The Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery Center is expected to open on schedule next summer

Anyone driving down I-480 can clearly see that construction of the$96 million Cleveland Clinic Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery Center is coming along pretty well.

After breaking ground for the 190,000 square-foot facility in November 2009, the project is 60 percent complete.

David Krymowski, the owner's representative for the Clinic, said that construction has gone smoothly since ground was broke in 2009, especially considering the unpredictable Ohio weather.

"It's been a pretty routine process, if you will," Krymowski said.  "We've had good fortune with the weather."

With some 180 skilled trade workers active on the site, the building should be ready to see patients by the summer deadline, he added. Much of the remaining work is on the inside, such as finishing the mechanical and electrical systems, completing cosmetic construction and drywall, and procuring the beds and medical equipment.

The project is expected to bring 300 jobs to the city and generate more than $600,000 annually in local payroll taxes.

The project has also been able to protect 37 acres of natural wetlands on the property and expects to win LEED silver accreditation for environmentally friendly features such as sensors that turn off lights and water when they are not in use. LEED is an internationally recoginized green building certification system that measures key variables such as water efficiency, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

Judging by how smoothly the operation has gone so far, Krymowski doesn't see any reason why the project won't be completed on time.

"(The Clinic has) a wonderful track record and history of being quite successful in a lot of our endeavors and this will be no exception in that regards," Krymowski said.  "We have nothing but optimism and positive expectations when the day's done."
