Great Escape: Housewarming for Elephants

Sounds weird, but you can celebrate the new home of the mighty creatures along with the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is presenting a very special “trunk show” to kick off its summer with the grand opening of its new African Elephant Crossing on May 5.

If you haven’t been to the zoo in awhile, this is a prime time to get reacquainted with another one of Cleveland’s greatest treasures and welcome back our giant, wrinkly friends.  During the past two years of construction, Cleveland’s three female elephants have been temporarily housed at the Columbus Zoo, and there are two new additions to the herd.

The parade of pachyderms includes females Martika, Moshi, Jo, Shenga and Willy — a 13,000 p-pound bull elephant and the largest animal on exhibit at the zoo.  There will also be meerkats, mole rats, and native birds sharing the five acres of grasslands and ponds created to simulate a natural habitat and African village atmosphere.

Festivities begin on Thursday, May 5 at 10 a.m. and continue through Sunday, May 8 when all moms receive free admission for Mother’s Day.  There will be live music, Meet-The-Keeper opportunities, hands-on activities and, of course, the always-entertaining elephants themselves.

It really is all happening at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!  With the purchase of a zoo membership, admission is free year-round including the Rainforest. The zoo is a great escape for every season, and the elephants are the biggest stars.
