Great Escape: See An Opera Or Ballet Live From Lincoln Center In New York City

The Cedar Lee Theatre Is Not Just For Movies

No trip to the “Big Apple” would be complete without a tour of Lincoln Center, home of the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic and venue for many other prestigious performances.  Even better would be box seats to a show, but time is short and airfare is exorbitant so chances for a getaway to NYC are probably unlikely.

The Cedar Lee Theatre comes to the rescue bringing you live broadcasts via satellite of performances from Lincoln Center, Paris, London and beyond that you might never have an opportunity to enjoy.  In addition to “The Met”, see the Bolshoi Ballet or the Royal Opera House of London from the comfort of a cozy theatre seat wearing your most faded jeans and munching on a bucket of buttery popcorn all the while.

Don’t be put off by some stereotypical image you may have of Amazonian divas and Viking costumes.  Opera is just a musical drama or comedy where the actors sing their lines, and it can be funny, scary, sad and dramatic.  It is usually done in a foreign language, but subtitles are often projected above the stage to help the audience follow along, and the “singing actors” are so expressive that the stories are easy to understand.

A special treat is the behind-the-scenes peek at the pre-show preparations like make-up, costuming and placement of sets, which is not something you would ordinarily get to see at a performance.

Even if you don’t know the difference between an overture and an aria, you should give opera a try.  When Richard Gere took Julia Roberts to one in “Pretty Woman” she said, “It was so good I almost peed my pants.”
