Unemployment Rate Drops In Mentor & Lake County

The city's unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest point since October 2008

The city of Mentor's unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest point since October 2008.

The city's rate in September was 5.1 percent -- down from 5.3 percent in August and 5.6 percent in July, according to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services.

By comparison, the Mentor's unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in September 2011.

Meanwhile, Lake County's unemployment rate dropped from 5.9 percent in August, 2012, to 5.7 percent in September.

During the same span of time, the state of Ohio's unemployment rate dropped from 6.8 to 6.5 percent.

The city of Mentor still has the lowest unemployment rate for any city in Ohio with a population of 50,000 or more. Overall, it is tied for third lowest overall (with Gahana and Westerville) for any of the 65 cities for which the state calculates its unemployment rate.

Mentor's unemployment rate peaked in January and February of 2010 at 8.7 percent.

Joe, I write a story on the unemployment rate in Mentor every month, whether it goes up or down. Neither "The Big Huff" nor the presidential race was the impetus for this story.

Regardless of your political affliation, lower unemployement is always a good thing. Untill unemployement is 0% you are never going to have each side of the ballot happy. Thanks Jason for posting these numbers. It is important to see how our area is doing.

oh Jason, its positive news for sure and appreciate the update. but, to say that in an open forum that Patch allows, someone should not make reference to upcoming election when the subject of that said story has direct impact on that election is just not logical.

I agree. The Repubs are quick to use the economy as a lightning rod. Every time I see one of their ads or hear the rhetoric I think about how Mentor is doing. There are job postings everywhere, sold signs on houses, new businesses opening, and our roads/highways are getting repaired. I saw none of this under Bush. It is political.
