Excedrin Recall Continues, Here Are Some Alternatives

No word on when the pills will return to shelves.

The has left many without the medicine they typically use to cure their ills.

Distributing drug company Novartis would not say when the pills would be back on the shelf, but Dr. Alice Stollenwerk Petrulis with MetroHealth in Westlake has a few suggestions until they become available again.

"Bufferin is just buffered aspirin and Gas-X is Beano," she said. "The easiest thing to do is figure out what the active ingredient is, and find something with the same dosage."

Ecotrin, a kind of aspirin, works just as well as Bufferin, Petrulis said. A low dose would be around 180 milligrams, and a high dose would be 345 milligrams.

Petrulis suggests Mylanta Gas liquid, an antacid, as a substitute for Gas-X. Mylicon, which is often given to children to reduce gas, is another option, as well as GasAid and Flatulex, she said.

For a NoDoz substitute, Petrulis suggests having a cup of coffee. She said there is as much caffeine in a NoDoz pill as a 16-ounce cup of coffee from Einstein's or an iced drink from Starbucks.

For those who don't like coffee, she suggests regular caffeine pills.

"The easiest thing to do is go to the area you bought the Gas-X and find an equivalent," she said. "Look for that key ingredient."

Migraines can be treated with Motrin or Advil and a little caffeine, she said. "IB profein, Motrin and Advil are all good for migraines. Excedrin Migraine is just Asprin, Tylenol and caffiene."

Westlake's Walgreen's pharmacy also stated that they do not know when the recall will be over, but recommended as an alternative to Excedrin Migraine.

A few Patch readers have been reporting dizziness, vomiting and stomach pain after taking the last few pills in their Excedrin bottles, but Novartis says they haven't heard of any complaints.

"We don't have any reports of adverse events," said Julie Massow, U.S. corporate spokesperson for Novartis.

"Novartis Consumer Health has also taken other pre-emptive actions to ensure our products meet the highest quality standards, including voluntarily suspending operations at the Lincoln facility and suspending shipments from the site," reads a statement issued by Novartis. "We are working to resume production and return products to stores as soon as possible."

Walmarts over the counter brand of Equate migraine medication states "Compares to Excedrin Migraine" is worked for 10 minutes, CVS brand which also compares to Excedrin Migraine didnt work at all, neither did Advil Migraine. Luckily, I also have bronchitis, so I tried a double dose of the caugh medicine with Codine. That worked, but I slept the whole night and the next day, woke up and its now the next night, WOW, where did the day go? This is what I have to look forward to? Please bring back my Excedrin Migraine so I can function.

I suffer from chronic migraines (+15 days/month) My neurologist wrote me a script for something called Panlor = acetaminophen, caffeine, dihydrocodein. The 1st 2 ingredients are in excederin migraine, the dihydrocodein is a synthetic form of hydrocodon - its not a narcotic, so its not addictive & you don't get a "high" feeling either. I now refer to Panlor as excederin migraine on crack (it works that well for me, better than excederin migraine. I'm just sharing to be helpful, I understand that prescriptions are more $ than excederin migraine, but I also know when I have a migraine I want it to go away no matter what the cost (speaking from experience)

I only have a few pills left in my last bottle of EXCEDRIN FOR MIGRAINE.. When is it going to be back on the shelves.. It is THE ONLY thing that I can function with, when I get headaches from fumes, like scented laundry soaps and fabric softeners, candle wax burning, fake air fresheners and a million other things.. I really don't know what to do... I did go to Walgreens and tried their brand of Excedrin for Migraine.. It about tore my stomach apart, and the REAL Excedrin for Migraines never bothers my stomach... It has been MONTHS since the recall, and I need some Excedrin for Migraine.. The REAL stuff.. Maybe I can write someone from Canada and see if I can get it from there.. I don't know of anyone going to Mexico.. I really can't live a liveable life without it, with the toxins out there.. I wonder if the Drug Companies brought out Excedrin, since it actually works, and prescription meds don't.. I really don't know what to do!!!

I've been taking Excedrin for more than thirty years, when will it be back and what is the recomended replacement??

What is the hold up? Why aren't any of the posts on here being responded to by anyone who knows anything about the recall?? There has to be a reason why Excedrin is still not available. It's driving me crazy. I am sensitive to asprin so I use the tension headache. There is no asprin in it; try finding a replacement for that!! It's killing me.. BRING MY EXCEDRIN BACK!!!

For all you ladies with real migraines, the prescription med AMERGE worked for me. I had migraines from age 14 thru 50 and it was the only thing that worked! Ask your doctor. It saved my life.
