Important Things to Know for Labor Day

If you're thinking babies, it's not that type of labor

We hope you are enjoying a great day off this Labor Day. We know you work hard and it's great to take some time to relax, gather yourself and your thoughts, and take it easy for a day. Hey, even God took a day off, right?

So as you kick back for the day, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Closings: As with all national holidays, there will be places not open today. Don't expect any mail today with the closed and will be shut down for the day. The kids might not know what labor is yet, but are off today, too. Finally, we hope you grabbed a good book on Saturday because the is closed today as well.

Labor Day History: The U.S. Department of Labor has this to say about the inception of the holiday:

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday a year later, on Sept. 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Wearing White: A tradition confusing Americans for years, abolishing white after Labor Day has two roots, according to Time magazine. One reason deals with summer fashion and keeping cool, while others speculate it was worn by "Americans well-to-do enough to decamp from their city digs to warmer climes for months at a time." It still makes no sense to us.
