Twinsburg Library Reveals "Muses and Spirit of Human Endeavor"
A Cleveland-based artist adds more depth and culture to the library's aesthetic appeal
The , led by Director Laura Leonard, is pleased to unveil a series of new murals in the Library’s Teen Crossings area.
Completed in July, the works were custom-created for the Library. The largest and most striking of the works depicts five of the nine classical Muses, re-interpreted with a multicultural viewpoint. Smaller painted reliefs throughout the area follow ten themes relating to the human spirit.
Cleveland-based artists James E. Todd and John Rivera-Resto took on the challenge of updating the look of Teen Crossings. After completing the renovation of the Library’s front lobby and Friends Gift Shop earlier in the year, the artists imagined a theme that would remain timeless and relevant for years to come. They settled on a vision of Muses Urania, Clio, Calliope, Melpomene, and Terpsichore, wearing traditional costume from five different countries: India, Ireland, Japan, Native America, and Kenya, respectively.
The art was produced on canvas in studio and then affixed to the walls using a 3000-year old technique called marouflage.
The Muses are complemented by ten smaller works, serving as sparks of inspiration for teens. The themes are classical literature, discovery and exploration, chivalry, history, medical science, music, popular literature, spirituality and poetry, art/painting, and the Olympic Games. Each piece includes two tiny portraits of historical figures who excelled in the area.
