Constitution Day
Celebrating X-Rated Movies, Profanity, and the ControversialIn 2004, Congress passed legislation designating September 17 as "Constitution Day" and inviting the citizenry to celebrate the signing of the Constitution. The law encourages "instruction" in the responsibilities and opportunities created by that document. In that spirit, Lorraine Baumgardner will discuss one of the most powerful tools of our democracy secured by a simple ten-word phrase in the Bill of Rights: "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech." That brief command, in Baumgradner's opinion, underlies the success of our 237-year old experiment in freedom.
