For Pediatrician, Working at Cleveland Clinic is a Homecoming

Lisa Light graduated from Twinsburg in 2000 and has come back to help children, become community doc

When Lisa Light graduated from in 2000, it would have been hard to believe she would end up back in town working as a pediatrician.

Light is now working at the on Darrow Road as a Community Pediatrician in the Children’s Hospital.

Light went to Miami University to study zoology. She worked at several veterinarian hospitals, the Akron Zoo and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It was in the middle of her undergraduate program while working at the zoo she realized her calling was to help children.

“I was always drawn to kids,” Light said. “I knew if I was a physician, I wanted to be a pediatrician, that was no question.”

For Light, helping children isn’t just a job, it’s a passion.

“I love working with kids,” she said. “Even when they’re sick, my goal is to get them to smile.”

Light said she loves the interaction with children and parents and having the power to help them through whatever illness they are dealing with. Those moments are what make her job worth it, constantly making her smile.

Light wants the community to see her as available and approachable. Whether it be shopping at the grocery store or at a little league baseball, she hopes people see her as one of their own.

“I hope to, as time goes on, gel more into and be more of a presence as a community pediatrician,” Light said.

After graduating from Miami, she went to Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Osteopathic doctors treat the patient as a “whole person”, rather than treating specific symptoms, according to the American Osteopathic Association.

Light spent three years at Akron Children’s Hospital where she completed her internship and residency. After that she knew it was time to come home, and contribute to the community she was raised in.

Light grew up in Aurora Shores, located in both Aurora and Reminderville, and spent her years in Twinsburg schools with her brothers. Her parents still live in “The Shores”, as locals call it. And now Light and her family are back home.

Two years ago Light and her husband moved to Twinsburg’s Glenwood Preserve and when she found out about the opportunity to work for the Clinic, she said that was her chance.

“I felt like I could help contribute,” Light said. “I could be that pediatrician to kids growing up.”

Things started out slow when the Cleveland Clinic opened in July (Light had zero patients on her first day), but things are starting to pick up as more and more families become aware of the department. And the fact that this is prime cold and flu season helps those numbers too.

As part of her community driven practice, Light has gone out into the city to find out what needs may exist at day cares or in the school district.

“I always thought that I wanted to come back to my hometown, and be the hometown physician,” Light said. “I want to be the community doc, I want to be able to see them growing up.”
