Proposed OH amendment imposes term limits — on everyone

By Maggie Thurber | for Ohio Watchdog

Ohioans may soon get a chance to add new term limits to the state constitution — but there’s a catch.

Rep. John Becker, R-Union Township, has introduced House Joint Resolution 8, which would increase to 12 years the length of time members of theGeneral Assembly can serve.

It would impose the same 12-year limit on all elected and appointed officials in the state.

The limit for the six statewide offices would remain at eight years, but the resolution would add the speaker of the House and the Senate president.

All judges and elected officials in the counties, cities, villages and townships, as well as school boards, would be restricted to no more than 12 consecutive years in office, regardless of the length of a respective term. Individuals who want to seek the same office after the 12-year limit would have to wait at least four years before doing so, but would be free to run for a different office.

The amendment would also apply to any board or commission, whether appointed or elected, in every jurisdiction in the state. People appointed to your local zoning board or board of elections would serve no more than 12 years.
