Decco Alloys Will Have to Demolish Building Section Destroyed by Fire

Twinsburg Fire Chief Richard Racine said all the fires have been put out but the smell still lingers

Twinsburg Fire Chief Richard Racine said he last visited the , site Monday morning and the collapsed part of the building has been declared a total loss .

The fire started when a 50-gallon drum of copper dust was ignited and spread throughout the facility.

The metal recycler on Midway Drive has had two insurance adjusters assess the damage since Thursday and Racine said both agreed demolition of the site would be necessary. He said they were going to get two quotes on the cost early this week.

While part of the building was unaffected by the fire, Racine said Decco will likely face two choices: Tear down the section where the roof collapsed and rebuild, or tear the entire building down.

Racine said you can still see a little smoke inside the plant, but other than that, the fires have been put out. However, the smell still lingers.

“You can certainly still smell the odor, which will last there until they can clean all that out,” Racine said. “But the active burning for the most part is done.”

Fire crews had to go back to the building twice overnight after the fire on Wednesday and two more times on Thursday, but Racine said he doesn’t think his crews have been there since.

The good news is the plant has been able to stay in business. Racine has seen several trucks coming in with scrap metal over the past few days and a generator was brought in to power the still-usable part of the structure.
