Twinsburg Police Say Goodbye to Four-Legged Member

K9 Niko will retire in June. He has served the police department since 2006.

The Twinsburg Police Department is saying goodbye to one of its furriest members.

K9 Niko is set to retire on June 30, going into the care of his current handler,  Detective Brian Danato.

"I felt it was the right time to retire Niko, so he could comfortably live out his remaining years with the Donato family after his years of exemplary service to the City of Twinsburg," Chief Chris Noga said in an email.

Niko was two years old when he was obtained by the department in 2006, paid for by funds from successful drug seizures.

He has suffered from diabetes for the past year.

Noga said there are no plans to replace Niko, leaving only one K-9 in service, Yasso, handled by Officer Darrin Fate.
