2012 Dog Licenses are Available for Purchase

Dog owners should renew their licenses before Jan. 31 deadline to avoid late fee.

It's that time of year; It's time to renew your dog's license.

As of Dec. 1, the 2012 dog license was made available to purchase at the Fiscal Office Service Department and at local vendors such as the Bath Veterinary Clinic and License Bureau in Fairlawn. You can find other locations here.

And in response to the many requests made by dog owners during renewal time, this year the Summit County's Fiscal Office is offering online payments.

The cost to renew a dog license is $14; local vendors are required by law to add a 75 cents service charge. Dog owners should look for their renewal applications in the mail. Call the Summit County Fiscal Office if you have lost your renewal form.

Despite the added service charge, "many, many, many, many [people] go to vendors. Most people have no problem with the extra 75 cents," said Nikki Sipe, director of administration for community relations of the Fiscal Office.

Ohio law requires that dog owners renew licenses between Dec. 1 and Jan. 31. Failure to do so by the January deadline can result in a late fee equal to the cost of the license. Failure to license a dog can result in fines, citations and jail time.

The funds collected from licensing go toward the feeding, vaccination and care of abandoned animals, according to Summit County's Animal Control.
