County Event Helps Those Struggling to Pay Child Support

The prosecutor's office is hosting the event for Summit County residents and all of the services and advice are free.

The Summit County Child Support Enforcement Agency is having a Child Support Solutions event two days this August to help those struggling to make payments.

Case managers will be available to discuss payment arrangements and support modification. Attendees can take a genetic paternity test to legally establish paternity, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh's office said in a press release.

Also during the event, parents who have their driver’s license suspended for failure to pay child support can reinstate their license and those with outstanding child support-related warrants can get rid of their warrants without going to jail.

“Parents can have one-on-one time with a case manager to discuss their case and what’s holding them back. Then they can access programs to help them overcome the common obstacles to payment, such as unemployment, criminal records and lack of formal education and training," Walsh said in a prepared statement.

In addition, representatives from federal, state and local agencies will be available to discuss the resources that are available to help parents finish their education, get a different job and become a better parent, according to the press release.

“I strongly encourage anyone with a child support case in Summit County to attend Child Support Solutions. We will be providing many valuable services, and all of them are free,” Walsh said. “Even if you can’t pay the full amount that you owe, paying something is better than paying nothing. We will work with you to arrange a plan that works for you.”

The event is Aug. 16 and Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Job Center, 1040 East Tallmadge Ave. in Akron.
