Need to Know: Back-to-School Statistics

School may be in swing already, but here are some national statistics you might find pretty interesting

How much did Americans spend during back-to-school shopping last year? How many kids go to private school instead of public schools?

Well, to celebrate the beginning of another school year at and the area's other schools, we've got a handy list of facts about school, courtesy of the U.S. Census Bureau.

$7.4 billion: That's how much Americans spent shopping in August 2010, the prime back-to-school shopping month. The only months with greater sales coincide with the Christmas holiday, November and December. Sales are also way up at book stores: $2.2 billion in August 2010. That's the highest book sales month of the year.

55.5 million: That's how many students, preschool through high school, will be enrolled in schools across America this year.

11 percent: That's how many students -- about 6 million -- will be enrolled in private schools this year.

7.2 million: The number of teachers in the United States, as of 2009. About 3 million taught either elementary or middle school.

$10,499: How much the United States spends on each student, on average. Number good as of 2009. 

3.2 million: Seniors, get ready for your year atop the mountain. Come June, about 3.2 million of you will receive high school degrees and head off to college or the work force.

$16.44 per hour: The average hourly wage of the nation's bus drivers. Numbers updated in 2008-09
