School Board Votes to Cut Its Own Pay

Board members will now make $100 per meeting

In the spirit of making cuts where they can, members of the Twinsburg Board of Education decided to take money out of their own pockets.

The school board voted unanimously Wednesday night to reduce its compensation from $125 per meeting to $100.

The cut was proposed by several board members to ensure it does its part to cut down the district’s cost as it tries to . Members said this is a gesture of “good will,” as they have asked other employees to make cuts.

“We are compensated whenever we meet as a board,” said board member Stephen Shebeck.  “We don’t get paid for meeting in any committees. The only time we get paid is for board meetings.”

President Ron Stuver said because of state law, it only affects newly elected board members. Because Stuver and Kate Cain-Criswell were elected in November, they are the first to take the cuts. All other members keep their current rates until the position is filled during the next school board election.

“Everybody has got to step up together,” Stuver said. “It’s not a lot of money, but everyone needs to do their part.”

The original rate was established in 2002.

“We haven’t had a raise in a while, but now we’re taking a pay cut,” Shebeck said.
