Twinsburg Looks to Join Suburban Athletic Conference

The school board will vote on the move at its Sept. 25 meeting.

Twinsburg may see some new competition as it plans on joining the Suburban Athletic Conference beginning in 2015, according to a media release from the district.

On September 25, 2013, Superintendent Kathi Powers will ask the Twinsburg Board of Education to approve her recommendation for the to accept an invitation to join the newly reconfigured Suburban conference effective with the 2015-2016 school year.

Currently Twinsburg City School District is a member of the Northeast Ohio Conference (NOC).

“While we have enjoyed being a part of the Northeast Ohio Conference, we look forward to joining the Suburban Athletic Conference,” Powers said in a media release. “The new conference will reduce our district’s travel time and costs while maintaining very competitive programs with schools offering similar academic, athletic and performing/visual arts programs.”

The Suburban Athletic Conference also invited Hudson, Stow-Munroe Falls, Cuyahoga Falls, North Royalton, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Aurora, Kent Roosevelt and  Barberton.

The Suburban Conference will form two-eight team divisions of similar enrollment. If approved, the Twinsburg City School District will be in the larger school division along with Hudson, Stow-Munroe Falls, Cuyahoga Falls, North Royalton, Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Wadsworth and Nordonia.

The small school division will include Barberton, Kent Roosevelt, Highland, Copley-Fairlawn, Aurora, Cloverleaf, Revere and Tallmadge.

The decision comes after months of conversations and meetings attended by Powers, Athletic Director/Coordinator of K-12 Student Activities Mark Maslona and Twinsburg High School Principal Louise Teringo.

The Twinsburg Athletic Council met on Sept. 5, 2013 to discuss and evaluate this new opportunity.  High school and middle school coaches as well as board of education members Paul Crosby and Steve Shebeck were in attendance.

The recommendation to join the Suburban Athletic Conference was supported by those in attendance.
