Memorial Day: What You Need to Know

It's Memorial Day in Twinsburg and there's lots of fun things going on.

But before we dig in, I would first like to take a moment to thank all the men and women who have graciously served our country.

Memorial Day is a wonderful and necessary opportunity to think back on those brave individuals who have sacrificed their time, family, and even their lives, to make us the nation we are today. So to all of our armed forces, whether at home or abroad, and all their family and friends, Twinsburg Patch thanks you.

Now, here are a few items to know about today:

1. The Parade: Don't forget starts from at 10 a.m. and heads down Ravenna Road to public square where there will be a ceremony (and a sweet military fly-over) afterwards.

This event should last until 12:30 p.m.

2. Holiday Closings: Like on all national holidays, some places will be shut down. and city offices will be closed along with the and the . No mail, no books, no problem; it's a holiday.

Tuesday's garbage pickup will be moved to Wednesday because of the holiday. If you know of other closings, tell us in the comment section below.

3. The Coverage: Of course we'll have you covered if you aren't able to come (like sleeping in is a good reason). Look for plenty of photos Monday and Tuesday and feel free to upload yours in our .

4. The History: Memorial Day, first known as "Decoration Day," was first celebrated on May 30, 1868, "when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery." New York was the first state to recognize it as an official holiday in 1873. Look it up.
