Boy Scout Doing His Part to Help School Children in Need

A Twinsburg scout is using the Twinsburg Public Library to collect school supplies for Haven of Rest.

One Twinsburg Boy Scout is doing his part to help children in need of school supplies this coming fall.

Dylan Aoki, of Boy scout Troop 223, is undertaking  an Eagle scout project that will support children at the shelter home, Haven of Rest in Akron. The project consists of the collection or donation of 50 gently used or new backpacks.

Aoki and other Scouts under his leadership will take the backpacks and fill them with school supplies and essential items such as calculators, pencils, pens, loose leaf paper, crayons, colored pencils, a game and other small toys.

A drive will be held at the Twinsburg Public Library. Collection dates will be on the following:

  • July 13- 10 a.m. to 2p.m.
  • July 14-1 to 5 p.m.
  • July 15- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Aug. 10 & 12- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Anyone who has backpacks that may be of help can stop by and learn more about the project on the dates listed above.

School supplies are quite expensive and this will help the less fortunate children who otherwise wouldn’t have a great start on their middle school and high-school careers.

"This is a chance to show the less fortunate that good things do happen even through some very rough times," Library Director Laura Leonard said in an email.

Aoki got the idea for his project from a commercial on TV that showed homeless children in Africa and how getting schooling supplies and other basic things such as a game could make such a huge impact on their lives.

He decided to do the same idea on a smaller scale and eventually came to the idea of his project.

"This will be the perfect opportunity to show that there are small ways to make a child happy, and a good education and a small game is a great start," Leonard said.
