Christmas Is Over, But One Family Is Still Giving

The Larsen family, owners of Silverdale Lights, presented a donation of more than $3,700 to the scholarship fund of Officer Joshua Miktarian

It may be closer to Easter when you look at the calendar, but there is still some Christmas cheer to go around.

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, the Larsen family, who own and operate Silverdale Lights, presented a check for more than $3,700 to the the Officer Joshua T. Miktarian Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Silverdale Lights is a holiday lights display outside the Larsens' home on Silverdale Drive, with the lights timed to music for the enjoyment of those who drive by or even pull up.

“It’s some serious stuff that happens in that front yard over the holidays,” owner Scott Larsen said.

Larsen said they wanted to help honor Miktarian and fellow officers by supporting Project Blue Light by replacing a white light with a blue light to honor fallen officers and those still protecting communities.

Miktarian was shot and killed during a traffic stop in 2008. He had been on the force for 11 years.

The money donated will go toward scholarships for a graduate of Twinsburg and Tallmadge high schools. Miktarian’s wife Holly and daughter Thia were there to accept the check, along with Twinsburg Police Chief Chris Noga.

“We are very grateful and thankful,” Noga said.

Both the mayor and council members expressed their gratitude for the Larsens and their service to the community, no matter the cost.

“I’m sure that’s a difficult electric bill,” Ward 3 Councilman Ted Yates said jokingly.
