Relay Rakes in $50,000 This Weekend

The Chairperson hoped the event would have raised more this year, but he knew his goal was lofty.

“I expected it to be more but I’m not sure we will hit our goal,” Felber said. “$85,000 was a bit of a stretch.”

As of Monday said they had raised around $50,000, but there are still a few months of fundraising left before their fiscal year closes in August.

To help fundraising, Felber said Luminaria sales onsite were around $1,100. Luminarias are bags with candles inside to honor cancer victims and survivors.

Around 33 teams celebrated Relay for Life over the weekend, capping off nearly a year of fundraising with an all-night party. But while the big goal hasn't been reached yet, Felber was glad to see some additional teams and leadership this time around.

"We had a lot of nice new teams step up into leadership positions this year,” Felber.

For the last few years Felber has served as the chairperson for the Relay committee, but after this year he is stepping down.

“I’ll still be involved, but I’ll do something I’ve never done before: Be a captain,” he said.

While he will still serve on the committee, other individuals like Beth Noga, Jennie Dawes and Ward 5 Councilman Seth Rodin will take the reigns in the coming years.

“Relay for us is about finding a cure,” Felber said. At first it was just something to do, but after 12 years he has seen so many touched by cancer.

“It’s taken on a deeper meaning and given us more motivation to raise money."
