Kent State's $616.5 Million 2013 Budget Approved

Fiscal year budget represents 31 percent increase since 2009

Editor's note: this story was updated at 11:30 a.m. June 12. Kent State University's Board of Trustees have signed off on a $616.5 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year that President Lester Lefton said "reflects the university's priorities." The eight-campus budget also reflects a 31 percent increase in the past five budgets despite deep cuts in state financial support. This fiscal year, which spans from July 1 2012 to June 30 2013, Kent State's eight-campus budget is 31 percent larger than the fiscal year 2009 budget. Four years ago, Kent State spread a $470 million budget across all eight campuses. The budget rose slightly in 2010 to about $491 million, a 4.5 percent rise, but it wasn't until 2011 that the university's budget rose…

Better bump it to 700 million. Want to make sure we have enough for Lefton bonus money at the end of the year. I don't know how he makes ends meet. Oh wait his bonus was more than 90% of what Kentites earn in a year.   more ›

School Board Should Make Levy Decision by July

In order to get on the November ballot, a board vote on the levy would have to be made this summer

Now that the final changes have been approved to the Twinsburg City School District's 2012-13 school year budget, the discussion will likely move to a new levy. “The final piece of this puzzle is going to be asking the taxpayers for new money,” Board Member David Andrews said Wednesday, after the board finalized nearly $3.3 million in cuts and new revenue. Board President Ron Stuver said the board will be looking at a few things in May before they start seriously talking about a new levy. The board will examine the results of the Ohio Department of Education's audit of the last five-year forecast and also look at the newest forecast, which includes how the recent changes are implemented. "I want to see how those numbers are crunched by our…

Twinsburg Schools Moving Professional Training to Online Format

The school board will vote Wednesday to do professional development programs in house, which should save the district money

The Twinsburg City School District is hoping to save some money by training its teachers and staff through an online program, starting in the 2012-13 school year. Superintendent Kathryn Powers said the school board will vote Wednesday on an agreement with Works International to provide professional development and training for employees through an online service. The contract would last through the 2014-15 school year at $5,600 a year for the first two years. Powers didn't have the exact amount of savings for the district on-hand, but said it would cut down on many of the costs involved in staff training. "We now can provide the training online without paying consultants or sending them out to miss work," Powers said. She said the district…

Two Public Forums Wednesday on School Budget Cuts

The meetings will be held at the senior center and the R.B. Chamberlin Middle School auditorium on Wednesday

The Twinsburg City School District will have $6 million worth decisions to make, and it will need help from the community. The final two public forums to present potential budget reduction options and hear from residents will be Wednesday. The first will be at the Twinsburg Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. and in the R.B. Chamberlin Middle School auditorium at 7 p.m. Superintendent Kathryn Powers hopes to both present the options the district is looking at and hear input from the community. The goals of both the school board and administration are to be transparent with this entire process to the community and to get feedback from parents and residents. "We have a lot of questions yet ourselves," Powers said in December. "We're interested in …

Twinsburg Schools Could Lay Off 70 Staff Members to Ease Deficit

The layoffs or any other cost saving measures won't be final until next year.

Keeping the Twinsburg City School District financially sound could mean cutting about 70 (combined certified and classified) staff members, busing and implementing pay-to-participate, said Superintendent Kathryn Powers at a public forum on Tuesday. The forum was held to inform taxpayers about the district's financial situation and of possible cuts that could be made. The purpose was also to get input from residents about what programs they think could stay or go. Close to 200 people came, and it's safe to say that no one was excited about the potential district changes. The district is spending more than its earning, Powers said, which means it is deficit spending by approximately $5.2 million. The district is looking to make up that money…

The Twinsburg City School District will have some big decisions to make, and they will need help from the community. The first of two public forums to present potential budget reduction options and hear from residents is tonight at 7 p.m. in the R.B. Chamberlin Middle School auditorium. Superintendent Kathryn Powers hopes to both present the options they are looking at and hear input from the community. The goals of both the school board and administration are to be transparent with this entire process to the community and to get feedback from parents and residents. Cutting Costs Will Likely Mean Job Losses for Twinsburg City Schools

Reductions in district personnel are approximately $4.1 million

As the Twinsburg City School District examines options to reduce its budget, cuts to personnel, including teachers, could be on the horizon. These cuts could amount to $4.1 million. Superintendent Kathryn Powers, along with the administration and school board, put together a list of possible budget reductions and cost saving measures that could save the district $6 million for the 2012-13 school year. She emphasized that these are just possibilities at this time and that nothing is concrete. There are three personnel categories the district will look at in making cuts: certified personnel (educators), classified and support staff, and administrative employees. “It’s going to be a matter of stepping outside of our comfort level, stepping …

School District to Explore Pay Freezes, Health Care Concessions

Twinsburg schools may use collective bargaining to revisit wages and compensation for all employees

As the Twinsburg City School District looks at ways to cut costs for the 2012-13 school year, they will also examine all employee contracts to find savings through pay freezes and health care concessions. Superintendent Kathryn Powers said the district could save approximately $1.5 million by re-examining contracts, changes to busing, pay-to-participate and other options. “Obviously the biggest piece will be revisiting the collective bargaining agreements with our unions,” Powers said. “I believe our treasurer indicated that would be a savings of about $800,000." Powers said this option was suggested by one of the district’s employees during a brainstorming session earlier this year. Some of the possibilities they will look at include pay …

Scott, If continung ed credits are mandated by the State...alll teachers...motivated or lazy must attain them. There are two issues: One, the state mandate needs to be revised. I don't believe a masters degree is necessary to teach gym or art...for that matter, it's really not necessary for any secondary school subject. The second issue is, if the mandate is not lifted, who pays for the …   more ›

Possible Cuts to Busing Could Save Twinsburg Schools Money

The district will examine several options for busing next year including shorter bus routes and privatizing busing

Next year, Twinsburg parents may have fewer options for getting their children to school. As Twinsburg City Schools examine cost-cutting options for the 2012-13 school year, they will also take a hard look at changes to school transportation including canceling busing to students who live closer to their schools. Superintendent Kathryn Powers said the district could save approximately $1.5 million with changes to busing, pay-to-participate and other cost avoidance options (re-negotiating contracts which Twinsburg Patch will outline tomorrow). Powers, along with the administration and school board, put together a list of possible budget reductions and cost saving measures that could save the district $6 million for the 2012-13 school year. …

I agree Scott, the traffic around the schools is very unsafe. I also don't agree with the concept of stopping the busing for the High School students. Not sure how it makes since when the High School students and the Middle school students all ride the same bus. I also agree why cut out school, children need to be in school to learn as a society we are falling behind in education as compared to …   more ›
