"SimpleWash" clears Facebook profiles of unwanted content
College students preparing to enter the workplace have to be concerned with much more than just résumés, cover letters and their wardrobes. Most students today have some type of online presence, and prospective employers often scan these digital footprints to see if there are any signs of less-than-professional behavior. Three Kent State University students recently developed a Web application to help those looking to clean up their acts – virtually speaking. Computer science majors Camden Fullmer, Daniel Gur and David Steinberg created FaceWash – now known as SimpleWash – in a weekend “hackathon,” a programming competition at the University of Pennsylvania that was held Jan. 18 – 20. Global Recognition The Web app allows users to easily …

Community Editor Amanda Harnocz wants to interview the people behind the pages everyone in Twinsburg 'likes.'
Do you operate a Facebook page for a local organization, group, business or school in your community? Then I want to talk to you. But first, a quick introduction. I'm Amanda Harnocz, a community editor for Patch. I'm a Facebook and general social media junkie and recently I was put in charge of managing social media sites for many of the Ohio Patch sites. (I know, lucky me! Right?) I'd click "like" on that sentence if I could ... Anyway, I want to do more than share your information on our Patch Facebook pages, I want to feature the person behind that page. I want to talk the operator about why the page was started, how your audience is growing and what types of things you like to post. I plan on doing several features like this in the …

Because kissing at the stroke of midnight is so last New Year's Eve.
Do you plan ahead? Listen up then, because Facebook is offering a new feature for New Year's Eve. Instead of clogging up the phone lines with mass texts and calls, schedule your good wishes ahead of time. Whether it's from near or far, you can wish any of your Facebook friends a Happy New Year at midnight in a personal message. Whether friends from Twinsburg and Solon want to swap messages or someone from Brecksville wants to wish someone a Happy New Year in New Jersey, it can be arranged. Facebook is now offering a service that will deliver a private message to any of your friends that will appear in their inbox at midnight Jan. 1. To get started, click here. You can even add a photo to the message. It's sort of like sending a …

"Facebook is our escape. For a few hours, we can hide behind that Mac and be whoever we want to be."
Facebook. Some people believe that it’s “of the devil.” I’m serious. I’ve actually heard those words come from their lips. And I think: Hello?!! Facebook is nothing more than an electronic medium. A neutral entity. A tool. Tools can be used for productivity or as weapons. This has always been true. It’s not Facebook that gets us in trouble; it’s our humanity. Just this week, I vented and posted. Within the hour, my words came back to bite me, in the form of a text. “Friends” aren’t necessarily our friends (don’t expect confidence!) and those whom we’ve "removed" miraculously are able to decode even the most encrypted messages. Some things are better left unsaid. Yet, I still believe in self-expression, “To thine own self be true,” and all …
