City, Township Finally Reach Fire Contract Agreement

New contract charges township a flat fee over the next three years

Editor's note: This story was updated at 3:12 p.m. After what some city council members considered a long process, the city and township have finally reached an agreement for emergency services contract. City council unanimously approved a three year contract with Twinsburg Township, providing fire and EMS service for a flat fee each year. Law Director Dave Maistros said the township will pay $552,000 ($46,000 per month) the first year, $563,000 ($47,000 per month) the second year and $574,000 ($48,000 per month) the final year. The previous contract expired Dec. 31, 2011, and the city has been providing emergency services without a set contract since January. Former Twinsburg Fire Captain Settling in as Streetsboro Mayor

Glenn Broska said his new role is "everything he expected and nothing he can't handle."

  You better not change. That was the message Glenn Broska, a former Twinsburg fire captain and newly-elected Mayor of Streetsboro, got from people after the 2011 election. "I never want to do that," Broska said. After 22 years on the force for the Twinsburg Fire Department, fighting fires and saving lives, he now finds himself in a new and often challenging role leading his city. Since he took office on Dec. 5, 2011, Broska has been spending his first six weeks "learing the ins and outs such as the different accounts and procedures" and realizing how things can move at a "glacial pace." Fire Fighters Train With MedEvac Flight Crews

Members of the Twinsburg Fire Department will be training to deal with medical helicopters on Saturday

If you see medical helicopters hovering around Glenwood Drive on Saturday, don't worry, everything is just fine. The Twinsburg Fire Department will be doing extensive field training exercises with flight crews from University Hospitals MedEvac on Saturday. The all-day training event, which will be held at TFD station No. 2 on Glenwood Drive, is designed to refresh and enhance the skill levels of the flight crews, including pilots and medical personnel.  Two MedEvac helicopters will fly into the landing area behind station 2 and the attendees will have a full day of lecture and practical skills evaluations at several break-out stations. VIDEO: Former Twinsburg Firefighter Shares Department's History

Dan Simecek, a retired fire chief, presented a brief history of the fire department with the Twinsburg Historical Society

At the Twinsburg Historical Society, retired Fire Chief Daniel Simecek spoke on the history of the Twinsburg Fire Department to a group of community members as well as other retired fire department members. Simecek shared his vast knowledge of the department, dating back to 1919 and also brought his 1934 Ford fire truck, the second fire truck owned by Twinsburg.
