Local university officials have control over permitting or denying oil and gas drilling on Kent State campuses
The decision to allow or deny hydraulic fracturing for oil and natural gas on Kent State University campuses lies with local university administrators, according to a state official. Kent State owns hundreds of acres of land across Northeast Ohio, including its eight campuses, the Kent State Airport in Stow and the Kent State Golf Course in Franklin Township. Kent has a campus in Twinsburg. Almost any of those large masses of property — the Kent campus alone is nearly 900 acres — would provide easy access to Ohio's portions of the Marcellus and Utica shale formations for oil and gas drillers. Heidi Hetzel-Evans, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which oversees oil and gas well management in the state, said Kent …

2014 projections show university will get increase in state support at 7 of 8 campuses, including Twinsburg.
After riding out cuts in state financial support in 2012 Kent State University is expected to see increases in state higher education dollars at seven of its eight campuses for 2014, including the campus in Twinsburg. Gov. John Kasich's proposal for Ohio's biennium budget starting next year shows overall increases in the State Share of Instruction dollars to Ohio's public universities and colleges for fiscal year 2014 compared with 2013. The proposal shows only the Kent State Trumbull campus will see a drop in 2014, of 0.4 percent, based on recommendations from the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. The commission recommended the Twinsburg campus see an increase of 4.3 percent, raising the state's contribution from $3.33 million in …

"SimpleWash" clears Facebook profiles of unwanted content
College students preparing to enter the workplace have to be concerned with much more than just résumés, cover letters and their wardrobes. Most students today have some type of online presence, and prospective employers often scan these digital footprints to see if there are any signs of less-than-professional behavior. Three Kent State University students recently developed a Web application to help those looking to clean up their acts – virtually speaking. Computer science majors Camden Fullmer, Daniel Gur and David Steinberg created FaceWash – now known as SimpleWash – in a weekend “hackathon,” a programming competition at the University of Pennsylvania that was held Jan. 18 – 20. Global Recognition The Web app allows users to easily …

Just hundreds left locally and online as of Thursday.
If you don't have a ticket by now, your chances are slim of watching in person as Kent State University battles Northern Illinois in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship game at Detroit's Ford Field. The deadline to order tickets through Kent State's ticket office was 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Kent State spokesperson Bob Burford said there were just a few hundred of the university's tickets for the game left as of noon Thursday. "Kent State’s ticket allotment for the Friday game was 3,000," Burford said. As of midday Thursday there were less than 200 tickets available for the game on StubHub.com. Ford Field has a seating capacity of 65,000, but it's likely only a few thousand lucky, local fans will actually watch the game from inside …

As a Kent State alumn, I'm proud of my Golden Flashes football team. But I'm very nervous.
This may be the first time I've shared my thoughts and opinions in a post. But let's be real; this is a monumental occasion. For the first time in school history (OK, since 1973, but it really feels like it) the Kent State Golden Flashes football team was ranked in the Top 25 AP Poll. I graduated from Kent State in 2010, so I have a valid opinion. Even before my years at KSU I followed the Flashes. In all those years, they were dreadful. During my time as a journalism major at Kent, I covered the team as a play-by-play announcer. I can honestly say the most exciting part of doing that was the fact I got to see Ohio State play. (Yeah, the Bucks crushed Kent State). The first-ever game I went to was my freshman year when Minnesota, a Big Ten…

Ohio colleges weigh smoking ban at recommendation of Board of Regents
By the end of this academic year students at Kent State University should have an idea whether or not the campus is moving towards a smoke-free policy. University administrators are in the midst of reviewing a recommendation from the Ohio Board of Regents, issued this summer, suggesting all public universities and colleges in Ohio ban the use of tobacco products on their campuses. At Kent State, students can expect to get a survey by the end of this semester gauging their opinion about the idea of completely banning smoking on campus. Greg Jarvie, vice president of enrollment management and student affairs, is co-charing a committee with Willis Walker, vice president of human resources, comprised of about 20 faculty, staff and students to …

The university is reviewing a recommendation from the Ohio Board of Regents to ban tobacco products campus-wide
To smoke or not to smoke, that is the question students, faculty and staff at Kent State University are considering. This semester the university put together a tobacco-use policy committee to review a recommendation from the Ohio Board of Regents, issued this summer, suggesting all public universities and colleges in Ohio ban the use of tobacco products on their campuses. You can read about Kent State's ongoing analysis here: At Patch, we'd like to know what you think. Vote in our poll and tell us your opinion in the comments. Should the university completely ban the use of tobacco products on campus?
