School Safety Reforms Central to President Obama’s Gun Control Proposal

The Twinsburg schools work hard to stay up-to-date on safety policies and procedures.

President Barack Obama presented a sweeping set of gun control recommendations last week, with many focused directly on increasing safety measures in schools. According to the Politics K-12 blog, the proposals signal a shift in federal priorities—the proposals ask for increases in school safety and mental health counseling funding, areas the administration has sought to cut in the budget in recent years. Check out the Politics K-12 post for a more in-depth look at the proposals, which includes creating model emergency response plans for institutions like schools and providing $50 million for training for professionals like social workers and counselors who plan to work with young adults. Gun Control Laws: Too Far or Not Far Enough?

The debate has heated up in the days after the school shooting in Connecticut.

It’s a question that has recently taken on more weight in the days following a deadly school shooting in Connecticut.  Ohio’s gun laws have been becoming more lenient in recent years, the Columbus Dispatch reports, pointing to a variety of new laws. To me the issue is not what he he used to kill, but why he did it. How could his mental issues been noticed and quickly handled for everyone's safety. We need to have proper mental health facilities available to assist parents, friends, coworkers etc when they notice an issue with someone. We need to try and get help for those we are concerned about and not just hope someone else will do it.   more ›

How to Talk to Your Kids About the Newtown School Shooting

An expert shares advice for parents who are trying to explain the Newtown school shooting to their children.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy, parents are wondering what to tell their children about what happened and how to help them process what they may be hearing from friends, on television and via social media. She says step one for parents is to “turn off the TV.” “We don’t want to have the TV playing in the background all the time. It isn’t helpful and the news is traumatizing for kids to watch.”   For kids age 7 and younger Hutchinson says, “you want to shield them from the media coverage completely and parents should not initiate a conversation about the event because kids this age cannot make sense of …
