Letter to the Editor: Twinsburg Schools Need Constant Police Presence

A Twinsburg resident wants the police to put a police officer at the access door of each school. Do you like this idea?

Editor's Note: The following is a letter to the editor from a Twinsburg resident. In light of Friday's tragedy in Newtown, CT, I'm writing to you with concern for security in Twinsburg City School buildings. Budget concerns aside, I feel it necessary to demand that an on-duty Twinsburg Police officer be stationed at the access-door of each school. A foolproof solution? No. But, a uniformed officer in the doorway may give pause to someone bent on maximum mayhem before first-responders have left the station. The door buzzer system currently used does not inspire confidence. My 10 year old is a fourth-grader at Dodge. My 9 year old is in third-grade at Bissell. My 6 year old loves his first-grade class at Wilcox. Next year, our youngest will …

A police officer at the school would patrol the building. While he's away from the front door, nobody enters. If someone breaks in another way, a police officer would do what police officers do. He would run toward the trouble to neutralize while calling the cavalry on his radio. You can't overstate the deterrent factor. Bad guys avoid police officers for obvious reasons. Cost is certainly a …   more ›

Gun Control Laws: Too Far or Not Far Enough?

The debate has heated up in the days after the school shooting in Connecticut.

What do you think about the gun laws in Ohio—are they not strict enough or do restrictions need to be scaled back? It’s a question that has recently taken on more weight in the days following a deadly school shooting in Connecticut.  Ohio’s gun laws have been becoming more lenient in recent years, the Columbus Dispatch reports, pointing to a variety of new laws. That includes one passed in 2011 to allow concealed-carry weapons in bars.  And it’s likely that the restrictions will loosen even further soon. Gov. John Kasich is expected to sign House Bill 495, NewsNet5.com reports. According to the most recent bill analysis, the bill would loosen reciprocity agreements with other states regarding concealed-carry permits, eliminate a …

To me the issue is not what he he used to kill, but why he did it. How could his mental issues been noticed and quickly handled for everyone's safety. We need to have proper mental health facilities available to assist parents, friends, coworkers etc when they notice an issue with someone. We need to try and get help for those we are concerned about and not just hope someone else will do it.   more ›

How to Talk to Your Kids About the Newtown School Shooting

An expert shares advice for parents who are trying to explain the Newtown school shooting to their children.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy, parents are wondering what to tell their children about what happened and how to help them process what they may be hearing from friends, on television and via social media. Lauren Hutchinson, LMFT is a child and family therapist and parenting consultant with a practice in Bellevue, WA. She says step one for parents is to “turn off the TV.” “We don’t want to have the TV playing in the background all the time. It isn’t helpful and the news is traumatizing for kids to watch.”   For kids age 7 and younger Hutchinson says, “you want to shield them from the media coverage completely and parents should not initiate a conversation about the event because kids this age cannot make sense of …
