No contractors bid on the project scheduled for June, raising questions on when to begin
City Engineer Amy Mohr hoped road construction would be finishing up by the time Kent State University opened the doors to the new Regional Academic Center this August. But now the $1 million construction plans are up in the air for the project on the State Route 91 and Creekside Drive intersection. The project was supposed to begin sometime in June and finish in September, but no contractors were willing to bid on the construction. “It’s not an easy project,” Mohr said. The project had 84 items in the bid including replacing the sanitary sewer system, storm water system, adding new traffic signals and widening SR 91 to include left-turn lanes in both directions. Mohr said that because the project is so intensive for contractors, they may …

The project is slated to end sometime in June
If the bumps and potholes on State Route 91 under the I-480 overpass have been frustrating you, relief is here. The city will start resurfacing the section of SR 91 between the I-480 ramps starting Monday, April 16. The project is scheduled to last until mid-June. Road work will be performed at night -- from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. -- and on weekends to minimize affects to traffic at the I-480 ramps. While the ramps will still be open, turning will be limited and drivers are advised to use the ramps at SR 82 and I-480. Work in the project includes asphalt grinding, concrete base removal, base repairs and resurfacing on 0.17-mile stretch of SR 91. The next big project in a similar area will begin in June, as the city will widen and add left turn …

Two residents spoke to city council Tuesday night, starting an interesting discussion
It wasn't mentioned anywhere on the agenda, but the State Route 91 improvements project was a major topic of discussion at Tuesday's city council meeting. During audience participation, two residents got the conversation started, opposing the project and upset with city council. Laura Giammaria started an online petition against the project and explained to council why she did. "I’m not opposed to change, but I will stand up for what I believe in," Giammaria said. The petition was created to give residents the opportunity to have their voices heard. She has watched the “highly touted” roundabout in Green closely and has seen no pedestrians and even semi trucks that have been reckless in driving the roundabouts. “At no time during my …

If you want to see the difference between a traffic circle, a rotary (UK roundabout) and a modern roundabout, search www.k-state.edu to see pictures. www.fhwa.dot.gov has a video about modern roundabouts that is mostly accurate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhHzly_6lWM )   more ›
