State Route 91 Project: What Would You Do?

If you called the shots, what would you do with the State Route 91 improvements?

It's the great debate in Twinsburg: Roundabouts or no roundabouts on State Route 91? As the project stands now, Phase I will widen SR 91 from Post Road to Glenwood Drive and build a roundabout at the Glenwood intersection. Phase II--which is still to be decided--would widen SR 91 to four lanes going to Solon and build a roundabout at Ethan's Drive and Meadowood Boulevard. But many residents aren't happy about this decision. Some believe it will cause even more traffic problems and be more dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. One resident even started an online petition, discouraging city council from building the roundabouts. Some would much rather see the road widened at Glenwood and a full left turn signal installed. Others think the …

I am currently on vacation in Bonaire and there are many roundabouts here. The difference is that the ones here are a lot larger in diameter than the proposed ones on Rt. 91. Even though the roundabouts work very well here, at times it can be very hard to get out onto a main street. There are about 15,000 people on this island, no stop lights and the people are pretty nice. So, I like the …   more ›

What Does Your City Council Member Think of Roundabouts?

Most members of city council and Mayor Katherine Procop agree with plans for roundabouts on State Route 91

The issue of building roundabouts at two intersections of State Route 91 has become one of the most controversial issues. As of now, the majority of city council, and the mayor, supports the first portion of the project. A two-phase project, Phase I would widen SR 91 from Post Road to Glenwood Drive and build a roundabout at the Glenwood intersection. Phase II would widen SR 91 to four lanes going to Solon and build a roundabout at Ethan's Drive and Meadowood Boulevard. While the city's main focus is Phase I, some residents have opposed the project in several community forums, and even starting an online petition against the idea. Even city council's views differed on the plan. On Feb. 14 council split 4-3 in posting answers to residents' …

*sigh*.....still, no one has shown me, mathematically/statistically, that there will not be a problem turning left off Sherwin, Warren Parkway, and especially Deer Run. They can't, because they (admittedly) did not consider it. Bob, I'm not opposed to roundabouts. I'm opposed to going forward without complete information. Why should anyone not living there care? The harder it gets to turn left, …   more ›

Council's Discussion on SR 91 Going 'Roundabout'

City council still trying to decide best path for the future

Even though there wasn't any legislation about the State Route 91 project Tuesday night, Twinsburg City Council still spent plenty of time discussing the issue. At the end of the meeting At-Large Councilman Gary Sorace made a motion to to hold the project and consider other options. However, only he and Ward 2 Councilman Bob McDermott voted for it. “The longer we continue to head in this direction, I think we sending the message that it is a done deal,” Sorace said. "Let’s show them what the other options are." Phase I of the project would widen SR 91 from Post Road to Glenwood Drive and construct a roundabout at the Glenwood intersection. Sorace said he has only heard from two residents in favor of the roundabouts, and continues to hear …

Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world. Visit www.iihs.org for FAQs and safety facts. The safety comes from the ‘slow and go’ operation instead of the ‘stop or go fast’ way a stop light works (or the ‘keep going fast’ large traffic circle fantasy). The smaller size of the modern roundabout is what makes them safer and keeps speeds in the 20 mph range. This makes it …   more ›

Council Split on Roundabout Future of SR 91

Plans barely move forward on construction of SR 91, not yet a "done deal."

Twinsburg City Council President Ted Yates said plans to construct roundabouts at two intersections on State Route 91 are not a "done deal." That sentiment was shared by several council members, especially when voting on a motion to post comments from the October meeting about the road construction. Council split 4-3 in favor of posting the comments that were addressed from the October meeting, some fearing this would be moving forward on a project they were unsure about it. Yates, Ward 1 Councilman Sam Scaffide, At-Large Councilman Bill Furey, and Ward 4 Councilwoman Maureen Stauffer voted for moving forward. Ward 5 Councilman Seth Rodin, Ward 2 Councilman Bob McDermott and At-Large Councilman Gary Sorace voted against it. Sorace, who …
