More cases of the West Nile virus have been reported this summer than ever before, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency said it has received 1,118 West Nile virus cases so far — the most through the third week in August since the virus was first detected in the U.S. in 1999. One of those cases took place in Shaker Heights. The city's health department said the 54-year-old resident is recovering and has not suffered any any neurological effects following a mosquito bite. Through Aug. 21, there have been 15 other cases reported in Ohio, including five in Cuyahoga County. Here's what you need to know to be informed about West Nile Virus. For kids under 18, even talking on cell phones while driving will be illegal
The Twinsburg Police Department better not catch you driving with your phone. Ohio's new law banning texting while driving takes effect Aug.31, prohibiting anyone from sending or reading messages from behind the wheel. The measure takes things a step further for drivers under 18: They can't talk on a cell phone at all, even with Bluetooth or other hands-free methods. "I am confident that this one small step will have a great impact as we work toward safer roadways," said State Sen. Tom Patton, R-24, who supported the legislation. No one will get ticketed just yet. There's a six-month grace period built into the law, and police will issue warnings until next March 1. But "texting" doesn't just mean thumbing in messages. It applies to …

The beloved burrito chain Chipotle could present plans to city next month
Chipotle Mexican Grill, famous for its burritos and tacos, could be stuffing a location in Twinsburg soon. Planning Director Larry Finch said Chipotle has expressed interest in building on a lot on Creekside Drive, behind Fifth-Third Bank. Finch said the burrito chain could even have preliminary site plans before planning commission by September. "We've had some discussion with designers," Finch said. "They're considering whether they'll get things in place or not based on lot limitations." There are some challenges with sewer easements and possible signage issues, he said, so it's not a done deal just yet. Twinsburg Patch will keep you updated as this story develops and as plans move forward.

New contract charges township a flat fee over the next three years
Editor's note: This story was updated at 3:12 p.m. After what some city council members considered a long process, the city and township have finally reached an agreement for emergency services contract. City council unanimously approved a three year contract with Twinsburg Township, providing fire and EMS service for a flat fee each year. Law Director Dave Maistros said the township will pay $552,000 ($46,000 per month) the first year, $563,000 ($47,000 per month) the second year and $574,000 ($48,000 per month) the final year. The previous contract expired Dec. 31, 2011, and the city has been providing emergency services without a set contract since January. Under the new agreement the township will backlog payments from the start of the…
Twinsburg City Council approved a conditional use permit, allowing the hospital to create a second helistop
Cleveland Clinic workers at the Twinsburg campus and some helicopter pilots can breath a sigh of relief: The parking will no longer be a helistop. City council approved a conditional use permit, allowing The Cleveland Clinic Twinsburg Family Health & Surgery Center to build a second helipad at its 8721 Darrow Road facility. Planning Director Larry Finch said Tuesday the hospital needs a second helipad for instances when other hospitals need to transport patients, when their helicopter is inaccessible or if the pad is inaccessible. As of now, hospital employees must clear spaces in parking lot for landings when the pad is inaccessible, Finch said. “It’s a slightly reduced version of what they have,” Finch said in June. “It’s a smaller …

President orders proclamation, Kasich sets date for Ohio native Armstrong.
The death of astronaut Neil Armstrong is the reason flags are at half-staff across the nation, including at Twinsburg City Hall. President Obama issued a Half Staff Proclamation in memory of the Ohio native, the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong died on Aug. 25 at the age of 82. Armstrong, the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, made history on July 20, 1969. Hours after landing, he took his first step on the mission that essentially ended the Soviet-American space race in the 1960s. President Obama issued the proclamation on Monday. “As a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his …
Oil rigs in Gulf of Mexico, refineries in Gulf coast region could be impacted by tropical storm expected to become a hurricane.
You may want to fill your gas tank today. Gas prices are likely to be going up as a result of Tropical Storm Isaac, which the National Hurricane Center has predicted will become a hurricane on Tuesday. The blog GasBuddy.com reported Monday that 25 percent of the daily oil production had been shut down in the Gulf of Mexico. And that's before the storm has hit. Oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and refineries along the Gulf coast, could be impacted or damaged by Isaac. That means the whole country will be affected at the pump. GasBuddy predicted that gas prices will rise nationwide between 7 to 10 cents a gallon in the next 24 hours. This is just as we head into the Labor Day weekend, a weekend where many take to the roads for end-of-summer …

I made a simple mosquito fan trap for a dollar that hooks to a cheap box fan that will eliminate all indoor mosquitoes and if left outside, will over time remove them from the neighborhood. It only costs about a dollar in raw materials if you have a fan. I put the video on how you can easily make my fan trap on youtube. You can run a fan all month long for about 2 dollars worth of electricity. …   more ›
