ReplyI could not disagree more with these comments. Students need to learn the skills necessary for success in 21st-century universities and jobs. This includes knowing how to type, research information on the internet, and use a wide variety of software. Many students are already using smartphones and computers at home -- why not harness their natural interest in these technologies to make the teaching of the "basics" more relevant and interesting for them?

ReplyI've been to these places, and they're all great! I'd add the wine bar at Anatolia Cafe to this list. Enjoying an Efes Dark and a cold appetizer sampler there makes me a happy man, and the dimly lit space is very cozy and inviting.

ReplyAfi, great job on "90 Years in 90 Days" -- I enjoyed it very much! As the story about you and your husband illustrates, history can be found all around us (and not just in dusty, old textbooks) provided that we know where to look for it. The pictures you posted shed light on some really neat stories and sites from the city's past.
My favorite was the 1935 picture of what is now Dave's Market at Cedar Fairmount. Having visited that store to buy groceries several times a week for the past few years, it is amazing to think that people were there doing the same thing there over 75 years ago. It makes me think about how the experiences of shoppers at Besser's fruit market and Wagner's butcher shop all those years ago compare to my visits to Dave's. I don't think they were buying Double Stuff Oreos and Cool Ranch Doritos back then, for one...

ReplyBelieve it or not, there was once a time when Dean Dairy's horse-drawn delivery wagons traveled Cleveland Heights's streets, delivering milk and other dairy products to customers' homes. A CH resident shares her memories of these here:

Hey guys,
I did a little searching and tend to agree with the original credit which states that this photo is from around 1928.
Here is a view of the other side of the store, also said to be circa 1928, which I imagine was taken on the same day as the above photo. I'm not a car guy, but I think the cars pictured could be from the late 20s/early 30s:

Also, I searched the Plain Dealer archives for "Giant Soda" and came across this 1934 ad for Marshall's Drug Store, offering "A Long, Frosty Cold, Different Drink" with the same name for 10 cents. Though the store from the photo doesn't appear to be a Marshall's, this ad still leads me to believe that the 1928 date isn't too far off:

I hope that helps clear things up a bit. Speaking of Giant Sodas, all this historical sleuthing has made me thirsty...

Agreed. The two dogs are clearly the cutest couple, and the true embodiment of loyalty, friendship, and love.
