Of all the molecules in the human brain, only one has become a rock star.
That would be dopamine. The word has become a shorthand for anything exciting or entertaining or eye-catching. Or excessive.
In tune with this, many with ADHD think of ADHD as a biologically-based inability to handle boredom. With dopamine -- released naturally or otherwise -- a temporary antidote.
Meanwhile, dopamine -- the actual chemical -- does exist. And does play a role in movement, memory, mood, sleep, perception, pain processing, timing, learning, and attention. And yes: in the anticipation of pleasure and reward.
On April 25, hear more from neuroscientist Kimberlee D'Ardenne, who works in the Decision Neuroscience Lab at Arizona State University. Dr. D'Ardenne is also a freelance writer, and the author of a forthcoming book about dopamine and other small-scale wonders.
